A verse to mention the new Irish . How about we keep the irish national for the irish and let the new Irish go home

The new Irish are home. Ireland is their home. It didn't take long into the the recession for the f*cking Nazis to come out from under their rocks, did it?

    Great Idea from Mr. Gallaggher

I think we should move away from militaristic and go for something more uplifting

    My vote would go for

The Nolan Sisters "I'm in the Mood for dancing"

The French National Anthem is very gruesome and bloody in its lyrics too, but I don't think you'd hear many French calling for it to be changed.

They know what they're singing though.

I don't object to our national anthem because it evokes war with the Tommys, I just don't like it because it's a really bad song. Wouldn't mind seeing it changed.

I would change it to this, nice and short, no words to learn and fitting.

The thing is, that isn't quite what happened. It was closer to a guerilla army being enough of a nuisance to an empire to make them reconsider direct rule which led them to withdraw on their own terms. To call it a defeat is a gross overstatement and oversimplification.

BTW this isn't Gallagher's idea...it's another FG co councillor/senator from Blackrock Co Louth (where Gallagher lives) called Jim Darcy.
His excuse was the tenative link to the FF party...Gallagher being ex-FF, what's his excuse? The lady doth protest too much...

Maybe they do - I don't know! Actually only the first verse is really sung these days, and if some of it was causing offence, they probably could get rid of all the other verses.

But I do think there's a crucial difference. In the event of a united Ireland, a new flag and anthem is a given. A change before then might well be part of a process to convince people in NI to vote for a UI. For the moment, though, it's ultimately a matter for people in the republic.

Think of the amount of money the good old empire is going to have to spend on changing the words when The Queen Dies :D:D:D

It will get shorter. "King" is shorter than "Queen", so the first verse will get 4 letters shorter, saving printing costs.

On topic: I'd be against changing the anthem. I'm not republican so I'm not disagreeing on any nationalist mentality but it is representative of the countries history. And it sounds good! It's great at matches and that, as people have all ready mentioned.

Also, anything written these days would be absolutely shíte! Look at Ireland's Call! Cringeworthy when compared with Amhrán na bhFiann

Irelands call is an utter load of shíte.

i think our countrys anthem is quite great, certainly we cant start changing our own national identity on a whim.

the french national anthem is even older, and has the same theme to it.

its regarded as the greatest of all national anthems and yet take a peak at these lyrics, dya think the french people are represented by this?...(maybe :pac:)
    Grab your weapons, citizens!
    Form your batallions!
Let us march! Let us march!
    May impure blood
    Water our fields!

I think it's great, it's easy to sing with confidence and gusto which makes a very nice atmosphere at the rugby matches. Unlike the national anthem which I personally have been muttering through my entire life..

You never see some scrawny lad in a tracksuit singing

    EVERY RUGBY MATCH,

    See the camera shots

    Fat Rugby Players
Fat Bird in Crowd hugging her Fat friend with Leprechaun Hat
Two fat blokes drinking Guinness singing into each other Man Boobs

The fact that many can't sing the National Anthem alone is enough to look as possibly changing it.

Learn it in English if you don't know the Irish words, it was written in English first.

And Seán Gallagher can go **** himself

Really getting sick of these presidential candidates. They haven't got a clue what the job is about (well maybe Higgins) and should just shut the fúck up.

Though it would be fitting to have a failed businessman represent out country..

I just saw the party political broadcast for Fianna Fail Sean Gallagher on RTE there.

I can't believe he played the "blind" card.

    The guy is a twat.

If you want a twat for President, vote for Sean Gallagher.

Or David Norris, or Dana, or Higgins, or Mitchell, or McGuinness, or Yoda.

Personally I don't give a crock about the North, demilitarising it and separating it from FF [the disgraced political party] is long overdue.

I would say we could keep it for military occasions, passing out ceremonies and dedications as most military personal and families know they difference from the disgraced political party ~ but for the common folk, certainly a new NA would be very welcome ~ a lively dancing tune ~ a great way to end a wedding or party and ENJOY it!

Aces/ I think that gets him my No 3 vote at this time ~ I wasn't going to give him a vote at all # but am warming to him, a bit.

Opening line ♫ Sinne Fianna Fáil atá fé gheall ag Éirinn ♫

In 1916, this was true, in 1922, this was true, today, only members of the Irish Armed Forces should sing it, IMHO.

Why the hell should the military be given exclusive rights to a song that celebrates Irish assertiveness and anti-imperialism? Quite frankly the southern army since its inception has had very little to do with anti-imperialism..in fact its first job was to be a battering ram for imperialism using British artillary and former members of the Crown forces in fighting those defending the republic.

Substitute laochra gael for Fianna Fáil and that'll solve your other problem. If that party s so disgraced in your mind why are you showing an interest in a candidate that is clearly an unoffiicial FF choice?

    fuck off
It should be changed to some kind of lament or a begging song.

Seriously, though, I don't like the militaristic nature of it. It sounds disingenuous. Finland could sing a song like that without looking silly but our nation is in no position to boast about any historical military prowess.
