Is it a firebird boiler you have? They're not too complicated. Don't think I'd be able to explain it in writing though, sorry!

You should just open it and try pressing the red button though with the power on, it will run for about 10 seconds, some will keep going and fire up due to having a tiger loop on them, if it just cuts out, you have an airlock, and theres a nut you need to open to let the air out. I wouldn't say anymore here though, because if you open the wrong one you could change settings for the level of oil coming in, etc. which could cause a lot of problems!

Yip, thats all thats wrong with it.
Like the previous post said, there is an Allen key nut near the oil line that needs to be opened only a few turns when the boiler is fring up. You will see a bit of oil coming out with air bubbles, this is the air getting out too. This should keep the boiler burning instead of cutting off.

Getting Oil today from Corrib Oil costing me €725 for 1000 litres , City Bin where €730

As for the airlock , my firebird has a red metal cover that comes off and there is a nut to the bottom left when the cover is off that needs to be turned anti clockwise and when the boiler starts the air shoud come out and the fuel should start squirting out of it after a few seconds tighten it up again and should be sorted.

If that doesnt work there is a chance that the filter is clogged thats normally on the pipe off the tank "a small Glass Egg Cup sized thing" , this could be taken off by with a spanner of some sort and given a clean.

Always a good idea though to spend €70 and get your Boiler serviced once a year.

Thanks for all the advice. It's too dark now but I'll take a look at the boiler in the shed tomorrow and see what can be done.

Figured it out, just had to lift up a box and press a button. Bleeding the radiators now. No more mini icicles in our jacks, thank Christ!

Been on for an hour now, no heat off the radiators. I think the pipes are frozen, nooooooooooooo!

Sounds like they just need bleeding.

I bled them.I used the key, a little water came out and then I tigtened it again. the radiators are making noise but that's about it.

Are you sure the valves are open at the bottom aswell? Thats about the limit of my knowledge, Im not an expert sorry.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,651 ✭✭✭stiffler123

Ya they were open. Just went out to the shed there and the boiler is shut down and won't turn on again all of a sudden. I give up. I texted the landlord to send someone out but he can be pretty lazy with his responses. Doomed to freeze for another while it seems.

What you have no heat source at all? Its -10 according to my weather station here in Wellpark, invest in an electric blanket is my advice, best thing I ever bought, it only uses 45w according to my power meter but it keeps me toasty watching tv and internet in my room when our heats not on.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,651 ✭✭✭stiffler123

No don't have any heat source at all. We survided the cold sofar so I guess a little longer won't kill us. I texted the landlady and she gave me the number of a guy. Hopefully he'll answer the phone 2moro and fix the boiler. Heading home for Xmas anyway so at least I'll get some oilage in then.

At least get a hot water bottle stiffler123. They're cheap and ...warm . :)

Are you sure the boiler stayed on for the hour. The boiler can turn off after a minute or so when that red button is pressed (it does with ours). I'd try bleeding the burner and leave the valve(ours looks like a long nut that comes out at an angle from the burner under that red cover) open till you get a good flow of oil. It might take a couple of goes at this to get it going. Its messy and a little wasteful on oil but if it works.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 58 ✭✭con71

It's possible that your circulation pump is bejiggered sir. Did you bleed all of your rads? AFAIK you need to start at the top of the house and bleed upstairs rads moving to downstairs and repeat. Worth a go if you haven't tried yet.

I hardly ever haggle. And having had a few hundred quids' worth of oil stolen, haggling for a tenner or so seems a bit pointless.

I'm not putting you down. Its up to you if you want to haggle or not. I have to say that last time i got oil i saved a bit more than a tenner by haggling

I ordered this morning. Started off at 385 for 500litres.
    Got it down to 330.
Thats 55euro better off in my pocket
Just did a search there and this is my earlier post outlining how much i saved by haggling. Hope this helps people. My advice is be tough and insistent. Firm but fair. Remember there's always a price they won't go below so don't insult them either haha

Had the oil delivered this morn - docket says 346 litres delivered, as opposed to the 361 ordered yesterday. In future and/or retrospect, I'd order a quantity and agree on a price, methinks. The delivery guy was lovely and helpful though, so I won't complain about the 15 litres... One only ever has their word to go on re: the amount delivered in any case.

I would just give them a quick call. They should refund you when you explain the situation. I'm sure its happened before. Usually they have a carbon copy of the docket they gave you. So they can cross check against the order to confirm.

Oil is really start to price itself out of the market as a energy/heat source?

How can anyone realistically afford to carry on using oil as a heat source?

Ive moved over to using my oil for an hour in the morning to heat water and house, then during the day light a fire using timber and if need be pop on a electrical fan heater in a cold room.

I see the UK government have admitted action needs to be taken to reduce the price to the customer, I wonder if it will be admitted here by our government?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,892 ✭✭✭Head The Wall

Electricity is the most expensive form of heat, what we need are heating systems with a lot more zones so you are only heating parts of the house that need heating. This is not an option for currently built houses as it would involve major renovation work

The other best alternative is insulate, insulate, insulate. It really is the best thing you can spend money on

Just an FYI that this is not just for customers, though they 'promo' it as such'. There is an 'online' discount of a fiver, but a non customer will get the same price through the site (there is a field on there for a 'promotional discount', but that no longer applies).

    Same price for customers/non-customers

When I 'busted' them for this on the phone the other day (I am a customer, and was trying to get a further discount than the one offered on the website), the lady said defensively 'well nearly all the website bookers are already customers'

    Have at it

Its an interesting point but in reality Oil if used wisely is in fact quite cheap, I spent some time last year analyzing my usage, 3 Bedroom cottage, well insulated but open plan (not a wise move on renovating). Turned off rads in Bedrooms not being used and had heating on an average of 8 hrs daily @ 60/65 degrees. Oil purchased back then was €275 for 500 liters (Seems like a distant memory). Anyway, measuring per week and calculating usage against cost it worked out at an astonishing €27 per week. Fair enough prices have risen and i know every house is different but even if it was costing €40 per week it represents great value.

If you consider coal costing nearly €12 a bag, Briquet's, wood, turf etc and the hassle with storage, cleaning etc i doubt you could run a fire or stove for €40 per week. Gas i believe is also horrendously expensive and not an option for most rural locations. Finally, I also used to use a Gas Super Ser as back up but cylinders are now costing €30 a go and i doubt one would last a couple of days.

So the moral of the story, yes shop around, Purchase your oil in the summer, insure house is well insulated and most importantly have your Boiler serviced yearly with Jets checked, my Plumber advised (and he was correct) a well maintained boiler is far more economical to run!

Fingers crossed the summer will be sooner than later, down to 1/3 of a tank!

I bought 1000 ltrs from Corrib Oil on the 2nd week of Dec for 695 Euros.

If the prices roughly correlate to the price of diesel & petrol on the forecourt, then the thread on Fuel Prices in the Irish Economy Forum does not make for good reading at all.

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056149306

According to this, some reports say that petrol will increase shortly to between 1.50 - 1.60 per litre.

You run into a problem with the more modern builds though in that a lot (most?) of them have a hole knocked in the wall of every room for "ventilation purposes", and a plastic grille screwed over the top of that. I've no idea what value insulation is meant to bring when you've multiple direct holes to the cold outside in your house. We had to plug the one in the dining room because of the whistling gale coming through it every year.

Just came across this on AAM.

Boilerjuice is owned by DCC (ie Emo Oil crowd) AND have been accused of profiteering.

    http://www.heatingoil.com/blog/uk-he...%E2%80%9D0117/

"In November, a UK heating oil blog listed 38 heating oil suppliers, implying that their prices appear on boilerjuice and claiming all 38 companies were owned by DCC, thereby impugning any appearance of competition among listed dealers driving down prices. However, the claims made on the blog could not be verified. But if the accusations made against DCC and boilerjuice are even partially true—that a majority of heating oil suppliers whose prices are listed on the site are owned by the same corporation that owns the site itself—the independence and reliability of the site should be questioned and closely examined."

The only way I'd trust a price comparison site is by knowing who owned it and also knowing if the companies they pushed had different work practices etc e.g. owner-drivers or whatever, that would explain the better pricing.

Is there anywhere that will sell you 50 or 100 litres? I'm out of oil and don't have the money to fork out the 200 quid minimum.

Excellent point, Whilst i appreciate it is the law with new builds (ventilation in all rooms), i am astonished at something i observed over the winter. My own house is over 200 years old so no problems re vents but my girlfriend rents a new build house and its impossible to keep warm. Its a standard 4 bed (to box rooms, big enough for a small cat), she put in 500 liters in September, another 300 liters in December, another 200 in January and at this stage were filling 2 x 20 Litre drums a week and keeping heating at a minimum. Thank god out local supplier charges the same price for drums and bulk delivery.

I put the problem down to these cheap and nasty plastic grates over ventilation openings all over the house. The only remedy seems to be replacing them with ones that can be closed but i doubt the landlord will pay.
