Big update on the new arcade.
Still a lot to do and as you can I've added another pinball...... maximum capacity again.
    Hopefully this link works.

Some upgrade from the old one,
Need to fix the juke box and get the tunes sorted.
    Also build a drinks cabinet/bar.
The RGB fiber-optic ceiling was an afterthought but it really makes it.

Best thing is all the cabinets are switched from the wall so I can switch everything on/off in one go!

    It's an original marquee.
Got it off mitchomagic years ago and made the light box.
I've a good few marquees that need light boxes but I've no table saw atm .

Ah, I was thinking that black space wasn't big enough for the machine.

Doubt there's many of them left now, the big ones were the first to meet the sledgehammer!

I regretted getting rid of mine and missed it so much I had to import another one and pay well over and the odds, also needed loads of work wish this was available then.. I love them but they are crazy heavy even with monitor out, built like a tank though, classic design for me would never get rid of mine again

Ah I didn't know you sold your original one. Did it go to someone in Ireland?

I sold mine to some random dude on adverts, would love to know where it ended up.

I'm seriously thinking of investing in one of those cabins in the backgarden for my horde, might be the way to go, especially looking at that set-up of Brownfingers.
    Amazing.
Kerbdog has a similar arrangement and I need one too!!!

Funny enough my blast city was spotted a while ago by someone here. Glad it went to a good home.

I have space for another candy. I'll have to get something to slot in beside the cyberlead. Might even look at twin cyberlead :O

My cat has semi taken over my 'office' :) I'm not using the space well, I really need inspiration on what Ikea shelving to get to make best use of a wall for displaying systems/consoles (away from little hands), storing their controllers/cables neatly and more! Any suggestions welcome :D Looks like Ikea KALLAX units are the way to go

    550 fibers.

    here's the kit I used.
I'm sorry I didnt get one that twinkles but the light source can be switched out to one that does.

I can only imagine the insanity that is the wiring behind all of that.

Did you drill a load of holes (!) and then trace each one individually through the ceiling?

    Yep,
    thats it exactly !
Drill down slowly as possible with a .75mm drill bit.
Poke the fiber through, rinse and repeat .
once finished, snip off all the excess.

I have a converted attic, where I have the lesser half.
Might upgrade to the other half, more space.
    Put some custom shelving in...
Certainly cheaper than the cabin idea.
Might save that until I retire in 8 years, build an arcade/home art studio...

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,787 ✭✭✭beejee

I've had a gander around some of those cabins, some are great, bit expensive though.

I move around a lot so space is always a changing thing.

I looked into renting a shipping container before, but couldn't justify it at the time (money wise and the fact a lot would be just sitting there never used.

All going to plan I'll have enough space for an extra 3 or 4 cabinets in the new year, so can't complain too much :)

I have a shipping container myself, use it as the garden shed.
It's there about 17 years now, cold and a bit damp now!
I can see it being an ideal garden office/gamesroom but it would need modifications like windows cut into it and fitted, not to mention a more regular kind of door.
I have seen some wonders online where they have been converted, but I have to wonder at the cost.
Not to mention the need to find alternative accomodation for all the stuff that currently fills the container!

I was originally going to convert a 20’ container but a lot of work and cost to go into the unknown.
Settled for a 2.8m x 5m(2 room) standard 45mm wooden cabin, I insulated the roof and floor with 60mm foil backed, you couldn’t live in it but it’s easy to heat in winter and cool in summer.
Not too expensive, cheaper than a block shed but wasn’t super cheap either.
I’ve 5 machines and a small couch out there and I’m at capacity, you’d probably get 6 or 7 but would get uncomfortable in there.

This is when I first built it, it’s gutters, lighting, decking/patio in front of it now, also games have changed
    I’ve currently got
SF2 project still incomplete, stuck with multiple dodgy chassis.
    Defender, now with multiwilliams panel
    Whirlwind
    Lethal weapon 3
    Fish tales

    Over on UKVAC :
    http://www.ukvac.com/forum/japan-arcade-trip-photos_topic374630.html?SID=0113381bfe81d5a1f3ezcafb282ze4097800926
So I went to Japan a couple of months ago and finally got round to sorting out a bunch of the photos I took while I was over there. Thought I'd pop them somewhere online so people could have a look at them should they so fancy!

    http://lardonate.tumblr.com

It's not the first time I've been over and it's interesting to see how things have changed over the years. Less and less CRT based cabs as maintenance becomes harder on them (Except at Taito Hey where a CRT with a slightly wobbly picture was swapped out for a fresh chassic rather speedily!). There still seems to be plenty of arcades despite a fair amount of recent closures, I was lucky enough to catch the Kawasaki Warehouse arcade a couple of weeks before it sadly closed for good. There was plenty of Old-school fighting action at Mikado and shmuppers at Hey, although the main business in the larger, non-specialised , more family orientated arcades is probably still the old crane machines and medal games (like coin pushers and suchlike). Music games seem to be very popular still but to be honest I didn't see all too many people playing driving games and other random games. The most popular Stick and Button game by far was whatever the current Gundam Versus fighting game is. Really very popular as it was a few years ago when I last visited. Other modern fighting games barely got a look in.

So the arcade scene is still pretty vibrant over there. Definitely worth a visit if you've never been, with a few specialist arcades dotted around the place keeping the 80's/90's games alive.

Edd Those pictures are class, and you made it to Kawaski Warehouse (Koolown) Arcade just before it shutdown. Its my favourite one overthere, erie since of themepark and 1980's Sleeze of Kowloon about it :)

You even caught a bride running out of the main entrance, thats Japan for you :)

Never got to Mikado, is it worth trip outy west of Toyko?
