Does any know what the B+ pot does on a monitor?

  • Registered Users Posts: 309 ✭✭purplec

    What's this B+ I keep hearing about?:

B+ is the name given to the main power supply voltage in a monitor. It's name goes way back to battery operated radios, and the origin isn't important here - but remember that it's the main DC power supply voltage. It's exact voltage varies from monitor to monitor - you'll have to check the manual for your monitor to find out what it should be, but it's usually around 120v. For the Sanyo 20EZ, it's 108v. For the Electrohome G07, it's 120v. For the WG6100, it's 180v. This voltage is adjustable on many monitors, but not on others (WG4900, for one).

So... how does this B+ supply work, anyway?:

Glad you asked (even though I know you didn't). For a usual color raster monitor: Isolated AC enters the monitor chassis from the isolation transformer. This is 120vAC (100vAC for the Sanyo). It goes through the main chassis fuse, and occasionally a line filter. From there, it gets rectified by four big diodes, and turned into DC. This DC is then gets filtered by a big capacitor (usually 680uf at 200v or similar, it's the biggest one on the chassis). After that, it usually goes through a fuse, then into a transistor based circuit containing the voltage regulator transistor and a large ceramic resistor. At the output of this circuit, there is usually a marked test point - or you can just test at the output side of that resistor.

    And I test it... how?:

Set your meter to DC volts. Put the black lead on the metal frame of the chassis, and the red lead to the B+ test point for your monitor. This test point may be a labelled point on the board, or it may be one side of the large ceramic resistor - check your monitor manual. If your monitor has an adjustable B+, dial it in using the control. It's important that the B+ be set correctly. Running it too high will result in a picture that's too large, and could cause the monitor to go into shutdown to prevent the HV from going high enough to generate X-rays through the picture tube. Too low can cause a small picture, waves of distortion in the screen, or image instability.

Quick snap of my new Urbanledge marquee in action. Looks excellent. Now just have to find a nice flyer to put in it :) (has to be Raiden related!)

Cheers dude! I'm in love with the cab alright. If I could get down low enough I'd hug it each night before bed :D

The beat up Ponys you came across were in the Trocadero right? They were Pony Mark IIs. Factory colour on them was a gunmetal grey. I remember the first time I came across them a few years ago I thought they were pig ugly. Amazing how your tastes can change! :)

Apparently they were actually some of the longest (if not THE longest) running arcade machines in the UK. Can thank the full metal construction. The guys at Heart of Gaming bought them when the Troc closed down and did a refurb job. Hopefully they're back on their site sometime soon.

Haha ya that's the one, grey color was horrid, but there was something unique about them. Yours is proper candy goodness in white though.

Ya its funny tastes change, all always love woodie cabs at heart,
But I hated Naomi, discusting awkward looking cabs I'd see in cork arcades,
Then I buy too and I love them .... So flexible amend customizable, they great.

Some day I'll get a proper candy I'll wait till proper place house one,
Couldn't bare put Egret next to washing matching like Naomi I have lol

'The future rides on this flight'

Was a great tag line that is!

Are they all original flyers yeah? Really look great together. I was considering ordering a DX one from this lad

Ooh how very dare you! Yes they're all original.

Just make sure your marquee holder is big enough height wise.

Don't suppose that chap has an RFJ flyer? Bit awkward for me to search atm.

Unfortunately RFJ is one of the ones he doesn't have. He has the two other Raiden Fighters ones which you already have :(

I like the VP 1 flyer in Starwars style he has in his listing !

I found an inelegant solution to my noisy monitor.
the clicking was getting insane so I had to do something.
I let it warm up and took the back panel off.
I poked around with a screw driver handle putting slight pressure on the yoke and found a sweet spot where the noise stopped.

So I got a steel ruler and covered it in insulation tape, bent it like a banana and wedged it in!
I was able to tape it too the monitors protective frame.

not a peep out of it now :)

not pretty but hay what can you do!

I had a noise problem with my Cute monitor and wedged a plastic monitor adjustment tool between the Yoke and the back of the tube .
Then I used hot glue to fill that gap and let it dry, that took care of it for 90 % and it sounds like any arcade monitor now .

glad im not the only one!
its still a bit clicky but fine for now,
I think you can get some sort of spray on plastic that works its way into the coils of copper and stops it rattling,

So I've been tempted to go for that Atomiswave from Purplec all week.
Itching, twitching and hovering over the place offer button like a junkie with the serious sweats.I nearly pulled the trigger last night after a few beers.

The thing is I have the money there "resting" but kinda wanted to next buy a candy which is unique.
I have an Astro already with Tri-synch chassis so it would be kinda similar.
    Convince me otherwise :)

    Pros:
    - Love the look of them and the colour scheme, control panel speakers and marquee are quality
    -made by Sega
-monitor bezel hinge swings upwards like a boss..could spend all day doing that
-1P CP is just a joy to look at,great design, size and coin slot
-same size(i think) as asto city so will fit in my door with 100mm to spare
-in Ireland so will save on Ronnie/Jeff shipping fees

    Cons:
-Much the same design as an Astro and I really want something different/unique for next cab
-tri-sych chassis as well, I really want dedicated 15Hz for next cab.
-My bird will beat the b00l0x outa me if I buy another cab.
-Rotating monitor seems near enough same hassle as an Astro
    -Going on holidays soon so...
-My bird will beat the b00l0x outa me if I buy another cab

Atomiswave SD is from Sammy...I know they're now affiliated with Sega, but the cab is based on the Taito Egret design. Definitely wouldn't call it a Sega cab. So at least it'll come from a different manufacturer to your Astro...!

When you say unique, are you still looking for something more modern? Or would you go with a classic candy? (A Sega Aero City would look great beside your Astro!)

There's such a huge variation between older candy cabs. Compare an Egret 29 to a Pony or an Impress. Plus they all tend to use 25 inch monitors rather than 29. Which IMO looks better for 15k.

I reckon this is the type of setup I'll work towards if I ever get the space. (and find someone selling a Domy or an Impress!)

Rklok work in progress thread on AO :)

There are three threads to keep updated with Ronnie. This work in progress one, his cabs for sale thread on AO and then his work in progress thread over on Nozomi. If he has something new and interesting it'll probably appear on one of them.

Here's the AO work in progress one.
