Look around for a Pinot Noir from the South Island of New Zealand. You should be able to get one from about €12 up.

I would highly recommend Marques de Riscal Rioja, available for €20 in Tesco and some other stores/off licences.

    Liquid heaven:p

As already mentioned the '99 Faustino I is down to €15..well worth it. Also the '05 Faustino V is also down to €10,also there is Muga for €19.99, haven't tried that one yet but other muga wines are delish...all from Tesco.

if there is a carry out near you try the Beringer Zinfandel founder estate...yum!

    Enjoy!

I despair at the suggestions above, and it's not a question of "taste" it's a question of quality. All suggestions except the one below...

I'd specfically suggest Whale Tail Pinot Noir from the Wine Buff shops at €16.99? Yes I am biased.

    new nzealand is in spain?
howcome the rugby is on at stupid oclock in the morning then?

Recommendations for wine are somewhat meaningless because with such variety each different offlicence/supermarket will have a variety of choices.

Generally, specialist offlicences offer better wines but supermarkets offer better value.

Campo Viejo Crianza. Can't remember the cost as I tend to pick up wine here and there and then forget where I got it, and how much I paid for it when I get around to drinking it. But all that said, it's a beautiful wine......and it's from Spain.

    that hardy implies exclusivity.

Most off licences and supermarkets will have a decent claret (Bordeaux red) for under €20. they're expensive for a reason. If in doubt go for one of them.

    Museum Real 2004
    John's Blend Shiraz 2000
    Coto de Imaz 2004
    Riscal reserve (as others mentioned)

This is absolutely wonderful wine, that is the Reserva. If you are lucky you will find the Gran Reserva in O'Briens every now and the then. It's around €36 but is so worth it (it has a blue diagonal stripe on the side of the label).

For around €20 you should be able to get Campo Viejo Gran Reserva as well. That is also a lovely wine that goes a treat with a nice steak :)

Gandalf...that was on offer in tesco for around the 12-13 euro mark recently...might still be available, I bought a good bit last year when it was on offer, hoping to put it away for a while...but drank it all!!!

I can first of all definitely recommend Andrew Jefford, wine writer/critic.
He has his own website, andrewjefford.com, and writes sometimes for the FT and also for decanter.com. He's one of my favourite writers.

I love malbec myself and am ordering two of the bottles he recommended in a recent article in the FT: See http://www.ft.com/intl/cms/s/2/b5a10ebc-cea0-11e0-a22c-00144feabdc0.html

They are both around the 20 euro mark. You can order them online. I could not locate Irish based sellers for them but worth the extra effort I'd say. They were:-

*2008 Le Cedre from Pascal Verhaeghe

*2008 Château les Croisille “Divin Croisille”

Agree on Jefford, great writer on all things wine.

The Le Cedre is available from The Corkscrew in Dublin, http://www.thecorkscrew.ie/chateau-du-cedre-cahors-2007.html

    O'Brien's

    and

    Le Caveau in Kilkenny.

One of my favourite Malbecs of all time too.

I think the Campo Veija is a lovely wine, it's probably my fave Spanish red and I've tried a lot of them. The crianza is down to €7 in Tesco at the moment.

Try the €3-50 special from Lidll. I had it for a few people the other night, they all loved it and these people really fancy themselves as wine buffs, much like most of the Irish that I know. They wouldn't know a good wine from a bottle of psis. No they didn't see the bottles, that's about the only way these idiots can make out what they're slugging anyway.

Definitely we could do with more reviews that single out the bland and the utterly crap wines that people should avoid.

Another lovely Spanish red I've had in a restaurant was a Beronia Crianza 2008. It was very nice.

Does anyone know of anywhere that sells it?

Of course they are Slaphead. It's they that didn't know anything, not me. Maybe you're foolish enough to imagine it's never happened to you ;)

You'll find it in the bargain bins in Supervalue, got some there today.Great value @ €4-40 and buy 3, you get the 4th free. I wouldn't drink it myself though.
