I read in the Leader that there is talks about an American company setting up a call centre in Limerick, possibly at the old Dell plant in Raheen. Does anyone know anything about it? The article said it could create 1000 jobs. Does anyone know any more? Sounds great but I've this kind of thing before. Fingers crossed though.

A call center for car thieves, sort of like the AA, but for scumbags have difficulty robbing cars.

I hope there is truth in this story, but I am quite sceptical thanks to the run of front page headlines over the last six to eight weeks in both the Limerick Leader and the Limerick Post.

We have seen headlines about how a massive new development was coming that would take in all of Sarsfield street, Liddy street, some of O'Connell street and some of Arturs quay.

We then had headlines about how the developer named as the one that was involved in the Sarsfield street story was looking to buy the Opera centre project and develop there.

Then a week or two ago we had another story about how there were four major developers all vying to buy the Opera centre and start a project there asap.

Throw in other reported projects that were "almost" ready to start like the massive riverfront development off of the Condell road, the massive city centre marina and river project, plus the long list of buildings that were on the verge of a major retailer opening up etc etc. So one can be forgiven for being sceptical given the long list of about to start major projects that get announced every year.

A call centre that would hire over a thousand people would be a massive massive boost to Limerick as the knock on effect in terms ofother jobs being created would be great, but methinks if such a project was really close to happening then bvarious politicians etc would be crawling over themselves to try and make it look like they had a hand in it rather than it being only the Limerick Leader reporting yet another massive new business/project exclusive.

From reading the article it looks like someone with an american accent rang up an estate agent and asked if Limerick has any 10,000sq foot properties that could be rented.

It has then been totted up that 10K sq foot could hold 1,000 jobs and then the leap to "US firm set to bring 1,000 jobs to Limerick".

Hope it is true but that's a huge leap to make. But im still happier seeing stories about people looking to come here rather than stories about how no one wants to come.
