Help wanted - engine trouble

    I took my 1984 VW Transporter for a spin this afternoon when it started pulling. If i changed to a lower gear and floored it, the engine would catch up for a bit then lose power. Eventually, when the revs got low enough, it stalled.

    I did notice a bit of a funny smell coming from the engine, like burning.

    I waited an hour and then turned it over. It started fine, but cut out after about 10 seconds. I tried again and gave it some gas, but still cut out. Tried again, but no matter how much gas I gave it, it would always cut out.
    I was worried the smell was oil so checked that, but plenty there.

    Any suggestions what I should be looking at?:confused:
