What if, the same way psn have allowed users to pre-download the game but can't play it until a vital piece of code is released at midnight tomorrow the same thing happens with disc versions?

Take for example those who got their game yesterday, what's stopping developers from leaving the disc unplayable without another piece of code which gets released at midnight at the time?
It would sort this whole craic out altogether, I think.

    + 1 fecking million :)

Do you remember the "always on" fiasco for the Xbox One? Its pretty much the same here. A lot of people would be buying GTA V for just the single player and some of those might not even have a internet connection.

Well then for those, there can be a code option.
You either automatically download a file or input a code which is posted online which will unlock the access.

Er, thats what microsoft would have implemented with the xbox one with the needing to enter a licence code to tie the game to your account, before they backtracked under immense pressure from the public.

Its impossible to do with games being able to be played completely offline.

Steam have been doing the preloaded thing for a while and even they can't completely monitor it with people in the states activating gifts using australian VPNs to get the game to unlock a day early.

Where's the best place to order online for release day delivery?

I see Pat's sold out on the first wave of preorders so it'd be Thursday, and I cancelled my Amazon preorder made yesterday because they told me they were sold out and were waiting on more stock, but of course this whole R* fiasco put me off.

My local xtravision isn't taking preorders, can you preorder it off gamestop.ie and collect in store on Tuesday morning?

What about all those that don't have internet access, that just buy the game for the main game. If they did as your idea, they'd lose countless sales of those that have no broadband.

Its way too late to order online and get it on release day. The only places you could try is an irish seller on ebay id imagine or try an english site and pay for express international delivery or something. But yeah, its probably way too late.

Might just wait and get it in Tesco on Tuesday morning then. Bóllocks.

I'd say your best bet would be to order on gamestop.ie and use express shipping. You might get it on release day that way, but it's risky. TBH I'd say your best bet is a B+M store like Tesco or HMV to get a copy on Tuesday.

Sorry but if you're in a country where you can buy a console, you are in a country where you can get online on a phone or something to get a code.
I can understand not being able to have reliable enough internet to be online all the time, but come on, who doesnt have a facebook these days! :P

    Revision 3 to my idea:
There is a text number where the gamer texts and gets the code sent to them.

    No order says packed ;)

All say packing - packing for the moment means there is an envelope in one of many many boxes (which as a boards priority pick means you're in a shiny box at the front) which has your packing slip in it, your address on it, it is stamped, express post labelled, tracking number assigned and it is sitting there waiting, begging and pleading for a GTAV game to be dropped into it, sealed and thrown into a bag, collected by whichever company your order is shipping with at which point your order will go to dispatched.

In short - there is no need to worry and I'm losing my mind with the stress of it all :D

Cheers Pat. Get some red bull in to you.

@CMPunked - I agree, just being pedantic. Also, since the problem seems to be online retailers sending games out before release date maybe they could use the code idea. If you ordered the online then surely you can receive the code online.

Nearest 24 hour Tesco to me is Clarehall since Artane closes at midnight now, so I think it'll be safer to wait until the morning :pac:

Yeah thanks for the priority Pat! 1 more day!!

Surely theres somewhere that's releasing tomorrow. Tesco and Harvey Norman used to do it all the time.

This is gonna be one of those ****s isn't it. Just build up and a slow dribble.

    Lucky for you!

I moved out of Santry to Balbriggan so my nearest 24hr Tesco is Drogheda, and it should be quieter hopefully, doubt I'll be arsed with Clarehall madness of Tesco and GameStop... :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,600 ✭✭✭✭CMpunked

Harvey Norman had loads of signs and posters advertising the games release so they're a good shout too.

    Yeah it'll be mental.

Does anyone know how long the midnight release stores tend to stay open for? If I got up early in the morning around 7ish before heading in to college would I be able to chance my arm getting a copy before everyone else who didn't attend the midnight release goes to buy one?

Because not everyone has a connected console?

Why bother with pre-orders if what you buy is useless until others have caught up?

Its not about Amazon. Its about Rockstar games and their sales wouldn't suffer at all so why bother supplying a retailer who breaks their release date if its no skin off their nose.

Erm... Well GTA Sells. Their other titles most certainly do need Amazon support, though.

Rockstar are aware of this themselves. Look how bad Max Payne was suffering until they shone the GTA Spotlight onto it.

Rockstar sales most certainly would suffer if Amazon told them to cop on. And Rockstar know that.

Why is there a certain bunch of videogamers that are determined to see any control of their purchases and consumer rights eroded into nothing?

I've a better idea! If people get the game via legitimate channels a day or two early, let it be. It's a videogame release date, some people seem to be responding to this like Amazon tried to sell their children heroin.

GTA V will be more addictive than heroin. Fact.

    .

I'm not alluding to that at all.
I've no opinion on the subject, I'm just thinking of a hypothetical would-be solution to the situation. Not looking to make it something it's not.

Oh FFS, go back and read my posts, I did not say that (in fact I said the opposite of it, but you know, selective reading on an intent forum, who'd have thunk it!).

Suggesting that discs need to have online codes to unlock them is doing exactly that. Your suggestion serves to benefit publishers, not retailers or consumers.

here my buzz is kinda going as i hear stuff that was reported but isnt the case for example the size of the map. i mean i wouldnt have cared, I'd been happy to hear its the same size as san andreas but when sources report flat out false information it sets u up to be let down.

Is likely gonna be the fastest selling/highest grossing game in history?

How long you reckon its going to take them to make their $265 million back?

    Hours/Days?

I'd say they've probably doubled it already with preorders etc.

So your reaction is to just let them pirate it because it will happen anyway? Great, that attitude will just encourage more people to pirate it. You need to make life difficult for pirates. The more difficult you make it, the less likely someone will attempt to pirate it.

Yes they will make an obscene amount of money on this but they have also spent an obscene amount on making this game, money they wouldn't have had if everyone illegally obtained previous GTAs.
Over 5 years of hard work has gone into this game. A completely original experience.
Compare that to the yearly updates with Fifa or COD, that's a different story!

There's a small percentage of people who are gonna pirate it - I know it, you know it, R*/Take Two and every other dev house/publisher on the planet know it. I'm pretty sure when they're forecasting what sort of profit they're gonna make from a title, a percentage lost to piracy has to be factored into it.

In a perfect world, no, there's no such thing as piracy. But we don't live there, so what's the solution? DRM? Well, that just bones your legit customers a lá Ubisoft, Sim City, Diablo 3, etc. The pirates are still going to pirate those, and turns out they got a better product than the paying customer.

So if you're gonna make life difficult for pirates, don't stamp on your paying customers' toes in the process. R* haven't done it too much here, but they're still causing consumers and retailers headaches with it.

Amen. I won't hear a bad word about amazon! I bought some clothes from them which didn't fit right in the end. I wanted to return them but the cost of shipping them outweighed the cost of the clothes. The lad on the live chat support thingy ended up refunding me and told me to donate them to charity :)

same, I bought a pair of cons off them ages ago and there was a very minor fault on the side of one of them, it was right where the shoe would bend from walking so I thought it might rip so i sent them an email asking if I could return them for a new pair, they refunded me and and told me keep them as well.

It will be the biggest launch in history not a bother. At a guess I'd say it'll crack $600 million day one, Billion dollars by the end of the week.

Stupid question, and not really on-topic but this thread seems to be well-trafficked :pac:

I was playing GTA4 and came across a Gold trial membership card. Does it work on existing gamertags that have already used a trial membership in the past?

    Some of them expire!

    Check the date on them...

You won't be needing gold til Multiplayer starts in a month or so anyway... :)

Edit : picked lime got there first!
