Saying that Rockstar Games is working on a new Grand Theft Auto game isn't exactly a bold prediction. However, sources close to the Take-Two Interactive subsidiary have confirmed to GameSpot that the next installment in the blockbuster series is "well under way" and is already having final touches such as minigames being applied to it. The sources said a 2012 release was "pretty likely," adding that the game's scale was vast.

"It's the big one," they said.

Development of the next GTA is "well under way."
Unfortunately, the sources would not divulge any further details on the project, which is already the subject of much speculation. A recent set of casting calls from a talent agency point to the game as being set in a Los Angeles-like metropolis, with a motley crew of California characters being filled for a voice-over session. Prior rumors had the game being set in the Miami clone Vice City.

As of press time, Rockstar reps did not have any comment on casting calls, the game's setting, or whether a new GTA was even in development.

Wherever the next GTA is set, it will have some big shoes to fill. Its predecessor, Grand Theft Auto IV, was a massive success for Rockstar and Take-Two. As of March 2011, the game had sold nearly 20 million copies, placing it among the top-selling games of all time. Its forebearer, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, sold more than 12 million units globally, with its domestic 9.8 million-unit haul putting it in NPD's top 10 US best sellers of the 2000s.

    Nice. Source is gamespot.

I hope GTAV is a return to form for the series. I would like to see over the top action, ridiculous guns, and jetpacks. Cant emphasise the jetpacks enough.
    +1 for the jetpacks

Rockstar is great at doing games set in a period. I'd love to see a 1960s london done with ps3 technology :D

I'd hate one in London simply because it's a dull shithole, among the fact that - as it is London - it tends to be full of cockney's, not the most endearing bunch in the world. It doesn't fit the thing that makes GTA settings iconic and brimmed with an oddly glamourous violent culture and stereotypes, and that is surreal Americanisation.

Just re-release San Andreas, that game was so good I'd buy it again tomorrow, cant beat stealing plane and flying over Vegas and parachuting to the middle of the strip, planes are an absolute must, it should be moulded on San Andreas and Vice City and then we can forget IV ever existed

Whether they set in San Andreas or not I hope they have the same concept.. ie. 3 large towns/cities and a lot of countryside.

I still think it'll be Vice City, it makes sense if you take into consideration the structure of the other series.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,248 ✭✭✭Plug

Hopefully we hear something official soon, I suppose gamestop are a reliable source.
I want planes, articulated trucks, chainsaws and other lethal weapons. I also hope they bring it back to the 80's. I'd sure love to meet Tommy Vercetti again, lovely chap in fairness:pac:

Vice city was the best GTA ever imo. I know people like the country side and such but GTA vice city was what GTA is all about.

OK, when GTA IV was announced and we didn't know where it is...this guy called
deepthroatgta4 left loads of clues hinting towards Liberty City. He cause a storm on the forums. The stuff he posted turned out to be true. He's most likely a Rockstar employing ****ing around.

Anyway he hasn't posted since that whole thing in 07 or something until tonight.
He posted a pic of a two screens overlayered of Red Dead and a road from GTA. Possibly hinting desert, or San Andreas!!

    Untitled-6.png

The image was crudely made with but this is a cropped version of it. So, he was right the last time. Will it be San Andreas this time?

I really hope its not san andreas. It's too big with not enough going on.

I loved San Andreas for its size to be honest. In fact i hope GTA5 very definitely does have a bit of SA DNA.

GTA4 was a very good game & a decent size but i got so sick of the dreary city-scape surroundings. Having a bit of wandering country road content should be included in the new game IMO.

A Vegas style map would be amazing.
The big casinos, downtown, the desert, the run down areas.
Would be amazing and have the making of great missions.

This is a pretty interesting article...

    http://guyism.com/lifestyle/grand-theft-auto-5-is-officially-off-the-record-in-the-works.html
Saying a new GTA is on the way is the new “Nintendo is working on a HD follow-up for the Wii.” But word on the street is that it’s actually happening, but more importantly, coming sooner than you think.
    gta4.jpg
According to Gamespot‘s sources within Take Two, the game is indeed happening, but the most important part is how it’s “well under way.”. More importantly, it would seem a release next year is pretty likely, and the best part is how “It’s the big one.” Whatever the hell that means.
Okay, time for some questions, and answers that I’m basically pulling out of my ass, but based upon my expertise nonetheless:
    1. When in 2012? Well, if things are going quite strongly, I wouldn’t be shocked if it’s as soon as next spring, which is traditionally when Rockstar games are released, around April time. Though if part 5 is indeed as big as it they’re saying, perhaps they might feel confident to go toe to toe with all the end of the year blockbusters. But my gut says no; Rockstar doesn’t want to risk not having the spotlight all to itself.
    2. Where will it take place? Well, as pointed out by the source, many believe that it’s going to be somewhere that’s based upon LA, due to recent casting calls. Personally, I don’t think so. Why? Because LA Noire took place in LA, albeit a late 40s version, but I still don’t see them repeating themselves like that. My money is something more closer to Vegas or New Orleans. Or better yet, London!
    3. How will it look? Amazing, one would have to assume. Though one has to wonder if all the fancy tech facial technology that was employed in LA Noire will be utilized. No doubt it will be tapped into, though not all the way like before maybe, unless they again for a full featured cast of established actors. Which you never know, since again, this new game will be so huge. Given how regarded the acting in the games have been, I wouldn’t be shocked if the next game is headlined by a major Hollywood star…
    4. Other predictions? Will take up a whopping four discs on the Xbox 360, there will be no Wii U version, and sorry, no return of Niko Bellic still. I believe the actor who played him, Michael Hollick, is still on not such great terms with Rockstar (dude believes he deserves a bigger cut of the profit margin from part four, and gotta say, he is a MAJOR reason why that game worked as well as it did).
In the meantime, and I’m shocked this didn’t happen sooner, but apparently there’s a GTA porn called Grand Theft Auto XXX. For more info, including pics and clips, head on over to . Do I even need to mention it’s NSFW? Well, just in case, it’s NSFW.

The reason why the speculation of L.A being the more then likely venue for the game is thaat la noire has most of the work done/ major tweeks bring it forward 50 years. Unless they decide to do one in the 70s or something like that...

The other thing I noticed was that Rockstar had a campaing ona number of game resoruce sites for the industry.... in late 2010 for in game designers in Rock star north and rosk star LA (can't remember the name of the studio) id like to say at this stage La noire was just going through its Q&A stage when this happened... In return rock star publish La noire...

But the issue is all the drama around Rock Star and Team bondi , Bondis manegement wernt exactly visionaries just bullies but weather in agrement with team bondi booth the engine and over all lay out of the game was part of the deal for rock star Ie they did the ground work now rockstar can concintrate on other peaces.

who knows but I have to say if they go along a similier story line a the ballad of gay tony which i think was as good as Vice City and funnyier ( i some how lost my pants :D)

    should be interesting.

A continuation of the ballad of gay tony (even as just side missions) could be pretty cool.

Yeah, they mentioned it on the radio a few times. Carcer or Carson City, something like that. It'd probably be a bit too similar to New York/Liberty City though

Carcer City is actually the fictitious city in which the Manhunt games are set, the city is actually located in Libarty state. It's like an ultra run down city full of maniacs, corrupt cops and psychopaths, worse than in any GTA game anyway!

What do you all make of this? Seems gamestation may have let the cat out of the bag.
Earlier today, Gamerzines had received a tip-off from a reader stating that he had pre-ordered the much rumoured Grand Theft Auto 5 for the Xbox 360 at their local Gamestation. Since then, the rumour has caught the attention of many publicists and readers alike. One reader has contacted Thisiswiiu.com to inform us of why the pre-order slip is more than likely fake.

In an email sent to us just minutes ago, a Gamestation Assistant Manager has informed of us of some inconsistencies within the actual slip. You can read the email that was sent to us below.

    “Hi there,

I just read on your site [thisiswiiu.com] about a possible pre-order leak for GTA5 from Gamestation. I happen to be an assistant manager at a Gamestation and I couldn’t help but notice some inconsistencies with the pre-order receipt and my experience and knowledge has taught me.

First things first, GTA5 has not been in our system at all. Ever. Why suddenly it would appear in one store is beyond me as it’s all hooked up to a server which spread through our entire network. I also checked back to the date the slip was saying [July 1st 2011] and again nothing was in the system relating to GTA5.

My second problem is the fact that pre-ordering is happening for the game. Normal procedure is that we collect data regarding interest levels and then we open up pre-orders once we hear more concrete information regarding any game. Since there’s been no info on the game, I don’t see why a pre-order has appeared on the system.

Next, the fact that no pre-order amount was paid. Again, from past experience, there’s also some monetary deposit required for a pre-order. The receipt for this pre-order clearly says £0.00.

What really gives it away is the fact that the game was so suddenly changed on the system. This, coupled with all of the information above, looks to me like a member of staff has purposely edited the data, printed out a receipt with a value of £0.00 (meaning the till totals wouldn’t look wrong) and then changed the data of the game back to its original condition.

Finally this my surprise you, but game retailers are normally some of the last to hear about upcoming game releases, especially for big titles like GTA5.

    Hope this helps,

    *****”

Whilst we can’t confirm any rumours, all of the above information does seem more plausible when you look at the receipt shown off. Whatever the conclusion of this rumour, I just hope we hear about GTA5 soon.

One of the most striking innovations in gaming this year has been the dynamic and realistic facial animation technology in Rockstar's L.A. Noire. It looks like the company could be planning to use the same technology in its forthcoming Grand Theft Auto V.

Brendan McNamara, co-founder of L.A. Noire developer Team Bondi told UK magazine PSM3, "I think they're looking at it for every game. As much as L.A. Noire is a huge game, Grand Theft Auto is incredibly huge, so you've got all the problems of how big the cast would be and how many lines would you have to record and all that kind of stuff.

"It brings a level of humanity to the experience that means people will - in the first few minutes - start relating to the characters on screen. They don't have to make that decision about 'whether I like this guy' or 'do I actually believe them? - but they can make all the like or dislike decisions based on the actor's performance."

He added, "Rockstar will make those decisions. They generally make the right decisions in terms of what they do for their games. Obviously we'd like them to, and they're more than welcome to use MotionScan, but if they decide it's not right for that and want to use it for another game, then that's fine too."

    Yep
