I am currently fixing up an old Dell Dimension 5000 and the speed of the machine is killing any power it once had with it's 3Ghz processor.

Would upgrading the RAM from 1GB to 4GB be worth the low cost or is this a lost cause?

    any advice greatly appreciated

Is it a pentium 4 in there? If so, it's hardly worth your while. You'd get 8GB of modern RAM for cheaper than 2GB old RAM now. A new €30 processor would outdo the pentium 4 too.

If you want to keep the machine, you really need a clean windows install (or get linux), but if you want this for longterm use, I suggest that you consider something new.
