    I know

I'm still absolutely delighted that Michael D won the day. He was the only candidate who really seemed to understand what the job entailed and I don't think anyone can deny the man has an unrivaled knowledge of the constitution. Besides that, he's a thoroughly decent man with a great love of the country. He will bring passion and pride to the country.

    I'm very very happy :D

it would have been a perfect day if dana had come last.
    with 4 votes.

she'll probably use her 6th place as some sort of moral victory and a basis to keep annoying the public through countless more local, national, european, and presidential elections.

Delighted for Michael D and any man who can put an idiot like Michael Graham back in his box is alright by me...

This puts me in a great mood! I hope it does the same for the country.

I'm surprised that Davis is performing so badly.. I don't know how that can be explained. I thought she'd outdo Dana.

Norris seems to have lost 4th place to Gay 'string of misery' Mitchell :(

    :(

I was really hoping Norris would at least get 4th; before this morning I thought he'd be up there with McGuinness fighting for third. Alas it was not to be.
I'm delighted for President elect Higgins and he will be a wonderful president for our country. But if Norris finishes behind Mitchell it will put a dampener on it for me. :(

As for Davis; she never recovered from the "quango queen" revelations. She'll wish she never entered now; she's gone from being a respected charity worker to a laughing stock (because of those quangos and those posters) who was deemed a less suitable president than Dana!

Any idiot that voted for SG can shut up the moment taxes are raised or a job is lost through the recession.

    Idiots.

Yeah. Like the idiots who voted for Labour. We had a Labour mayor in Waterford with a casting vote who voted in Water charges last week. Socialists my arse. And those deluded enough to vote for them are worse. Clowns.

How do you figure that the electorate gave the shinners the two fingers, I certainly don't think they did. MMcG actually polled far better than I thought he would, especially after Mitchell appeared to be kicking a puppy with his little rant!

SF tried everything to improve their vote. They didn't. Thankfully. :)

Doubt it.. I reckon the decision to bring up Gallagher's lies was made because they'd rather see Higgins as president and at the time Gallagher was favorite to win. I really don't think there was any expectation that McGuinness' vote would improve.

Whatever the reasons for it were, I for one am glad they scuppered Gallagher's chances. Much happier to see Higgins win.

Nice! It seems you started a whole trend....of stupid name calling that most women find offensive - well done! future AH's champion..

Dana lost, she put herself up as a candidate, along with Mary Davis and even when it was perfectly apparent that there was no hope for her, she was still herself at the end of the day, lost, silly, very many things, that even women didn't relate to, but not the President - but certainly not an anonymous person who calls women 'Geebags' - Clever! not.

I think it's good that, after 21 years of a female Marian dictatorship, we finally have a man back up the Áras.

    Now, I shall break out into song;

    God save our gracious King,
    Long live our noble King,
    God save the King!

Second count completed, count adjourned to the morning:
0142 The standing of the remaining five candidates after the Second Count:

    Higgins: 730,480 votes (+29,379); Gallagher 529,401 (+24,437); McGuinness 252,611 (+9,581); Mitchell 127,357 (+14,036); Norris 116,526 (+7,057)
    The quota is 885,882.

I think Mitchell and Norris votes can be counted together as both don't add up to McGuinness's vote, not sure though.

It mightn't need McGuinness to elect Higgins if he does very well from transfers, possible from a Norris and FG vote, I'd say it'll still need a McGuinness count.

I honestly thought Norris would poll better than Mitchell.

I honestly thought Norris would poll better than Mitchell.

It's the party political association, no matter how dire Mitchell was, he's more transferable than McGuinness eg.!

The FG vote not voting Mitchell was going Gallagher and then Higgins after the collapse, it wont go near McGuinness, Norris the same, though far more Higgins.

Thinking about it, we wont need to count the McGuinness vote, his vote wont matter, which is pretty poor, no matter how the Shinners spin it!

Good enough result. We will have an inoffensive little President who probably won the day because he annoyed fewer people than the other candidates. I just hope he doesn't see it as a mandate to start spouting his crap poetry in public.

My main reason to be happy is that SF, despite running their highest profile candidate, failed to make much of an impression. Their much heralded breakthrough into mainstream southern politics shows no sign of happening any time soon.

He made an impression and his high profile?, sure Haughey was high profile for FF, transfer toxic though.

Mitchell is getting more transfers, that's how transfer toxic McGuinness is.

Transfer are key in PR, it's why FF ended up with 20 seats and Labour 37 with not that much of a vote difference.

Very sure. He received a lower percentage of first preference votes than Adams got in the general election in Louth. SF may do reasonably well in border counties and deprived areas of the country but as for the rest of the Irish Republic, they can forget it.
