Is there a market for a 'proper' gym in Mullingar?

I'm fed up with the gyms in Mullingar

1 Park Hotel - too expensive, poor range of proper weights and equipment, too far from town
2 Bloomfield - too far from town, poor range weights and equipment
3 Flex - small, not enough weights and equipment, dressing rooms are very basic, poor opening hours

there is a need for a gym in the town centre!!
    with good opening hours
    a decent range of equipment
    good classes offered
    and nice changing facilities

    anyone agree??

I agree with you there is a market for a gym but not in the current economic climate. The park hotel is priced to suit those on the higher wage. I was a member of the park on and off for a few years. The Flex gym is'nt too bad and is in a reasonable location. I think there is a need for a gym that will include a class of some description in the annual fee.

How much equipment do you need?

if you are serious about training and playing sport then lots, and i prefer not waiting around until a few other people are finished

free weights (a few sets of them)
plenty of barbells and the plates for them (especially the smaller weights)
benches (for both barbells and dumbbells)
    squat racks and power cages
    pull up and dip stations
    medicine balls
    swiss balls
    plyometric boxes

I rarely use machines so I'm not quite sure whats needed there.

I think what mullingar needs is a new Leisure Centre. Swimming pool and gymnasium and studios for different classes which can run at the same time. Mullingar is always behind other towns/cities in terms of facilities. For example, we only got a bowling alley about a year ago for the first the time, its 2011 for gods sake.

    that is true.
but I like the fact that the pool is in the middle of town, and not out in robinstown (where it was planned to move it to) or wherever it would be
    the less driving, the better

I used Flex last Xmas when I was home for two weeks.

    What equipment do you want???

It has a squat rack, benches, barbells and dumbbells. A place to do chins and dips.

    What are you missing?

But to help you out, ask about and see if you can get into the gym at the rugby club, or one of the GAA clubs. I've never been but I'm sure they'd have the essentials and not be crowded.

Or build a garden shed and have your own!

Build your own squat rack and scrounge around for second hand weights etc.

I know they have ok equipment.
Just that the building is very small, badly laid out and can be very busy with limited amount of equipment

yeah your definitely right, especially with the price range, i wanted to join flex permanently but in the end thought it wasnt worth it just for the equipment they have, it would have been if classes were included tho, it's not a bad place.

tbh, back home, i just used machines, treadmills etc. back home they have weights machines, had noticed it was mostly posers (no offence) and ppl that just wanted to sit and stair at themselves in the mirrors, so i never done free weights, all machine work. is there anywhere that has machines like that here?

Sorry for dragging up an old thread but did anyone else see the new gym opened on austin friar street right beside Alo Gowran Lighting? Can't remember what it's called. Wonder is it any good?
