Is there anywhere in Cork city or county where I might be able to pick up some part worn winter tyres????

There is a place in Carrigtohill, (at the back of the industrial estate accross from Aldi) called Budget Tyres.

They are selling part worn winter tyres.

I got 225/35/18 and 255/40/18's ....the rear tyres are runflats.

Went on a 3 series couple....50 quid each corner! Plenty of thread left on each tyre.

    What exactly are winter tyres
    Are they for ice
    Or for damp/wet roads

They are for use at temperatures below 7 degrees celsius.

Basically they work better than summer tyres, in all weather conditions once the temperature is 7 or below.

Note that at least some of the tyre places offering 'part worn winter tyres' are actually selling re-treaded summer tyres. Avoid!

The thing about some part worn tyre centres (Not saying Kellehers do this btw, just something to be wary of) is that you can end up with 4 completely different tyres and 4 completely different tread patterns. It's not something you want on a car, it's downright dangerous.

Unless you've got some monster of a RWD car, normal tyres are good enough for most purposes, and when we inevitably get the 2 weeks of snow, a set of tyre socks will cost about half the price of part worn tyres.

If you know how to control you car, you'll be fine in most weather. I was driving around the Mountains in Kerry near Lyxnaw last year in a FWD car in the worst of it on 'Sunny' cheap ass tyres. No problems at all once you drive at the right pace, and understand how your car will react on poor grip surfaces.
