media player woes

hi folks, when i connect my lappy to the tv via hdmi cable i have perfect sound from the tv but no picture all i am getting is my screensaver on the tv, i have tried windows media player and vlc, i have a samsung x22 with vista as the O.S. thanks in advance for your help.
