    Hey guys

I started a thread on here a few months ago looking for advice on good 8 bit games. The replies i got kept me going for ages!
Today i was in the local cash converters and they have a sega megadrive (with mega cd) and a snes. I can pick both up for fairly cheap so im gonna maybe get both this weekend. Any way, same as last time im looking suggestions for great games. They dont have to be the usual suspects as im a fan of quirky rare games too.

    Thanks for you suggestions guys!

    Where does one start?

I'll give one each, & try avoid the usuals...

SNES - Contra III (tough ass game, seriously good though)
Megadrive - Gunstar Heros (though a few here hate that for some bizarre reason)
Mega CD - Snatcher CD (pricey, but on an unrelated note the Mega CD has no copy protection)

I was going to do a list but I'm too tired and there's too much to list :(

Just use Boards search bar and look for references to Megadrive and Snes, you'll find tons!

I hear Zelda on the Snes is pretty good, and unconfirmed reports that Super Mario World is better than Sonic 2.....

The only people that hate Gunstar Heroes are Halo fans, that therefore have no taste, and Edge magazine, funnily enough another bunch of Halo fans.

    Stop talking silly.
These reports are 100% accurate and you know it!!

Dammit I got that mixed up. Stupid false confusing reports and wording.
    Remove your thanks Nintendo people!

    Best game ever?

Hell, I'd raise an eyebrow at best game on Megadrive!

Super Metroid ftw, by the way.

Batman Returns, oddly, is one of my favourite Snes games, along with Metroid.
Super Mario Alllstars stands as one of the best carts in the world.
The Starfox is great, and I have a soft spot for Stunt Race FX. Alien3 is pretty fine too.

MD games, well there's Alladin, Cool Spot, Virtua Racing, Sonic series, Puyo Puyo, Road Rash 2 is another favourite, as is Desert Strike and Thunder Force IV.

I'd take Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros 3, Mario World, Yoshi's Island, Mario 64, Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, hell even Mario Sunshine over any Sonic game.

Some things are a matter of taste. Somethings however are just fact and the best Sonic games being no where near as good as Marios best is one of those facts :P

Sonic 2 is pretty damn good still.

Actually Sensible Soccer was great. 11-1 to united with Ryan Goggs with 7 goals.

****e that Liverpool weren't in it though.

Street fighter 2 turbo on Snes is excellent though.
Turtles in Time is a great beat em up.
F-Zero is a superb racing game. Great music and excellent graphics.
Secret of Mana levelling up fun
    Sunset Riders is also good
    Pop n twinbee
    Super pang
    Bomberman
    Megaman x
    Castlevania
    Secret of evermore
    Illusion of time
    Lemmings
    All good games right there.

I know the usual suspects so im looking cult type games. Games that are cool but not the big ones!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,971 ✭✭✭Orim

    Metal Marines

Not the best game in the world but nonetheless it's very fun.

Fairly simplified RTS with easy enough to use combat and economy but can get very tough towards the end.

Further support for Sunset Riders as well.

EDIT : It's turn based, not real-time. Still a great game and up there with advance wars as one of the few times strategy was done right on a console.

When I saw the OP asking for lesser known but awesome MD games this was first to spring to my mind.

And yes, it's the proto C and C, good stuff.

Harkonnen nukes and suicide tanks ftw

To hell with you Harkonnen lover!
    Let the Sisters have you!
Actually, come a little closer and I'll have your heart plug out!

Atreides are a bit of wet blanket though, aside from Maud'Dib, but he had more in common with the ass-kicking Fremen...

Yup and the cheating AI as well :)

People still love Mario Kart 64, and it had super cheap AI didn't it?

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,036 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Yep but it's still kind of funny. The cheating AI from Dune 2 was actually carried over to Command and Conquer. Even if you take out the enemies means of collecting money they have an infinite amount of money. In C&C I cut off the AI's means of getting any cash and yet their silos kept filling up and I kept robbing them with engineers :)

Heres a list of the snes games I own, (some of the best ones imo)

donkey kong country 1 2 and 3(amazing tough gameplay + gfx)
super mario kart(best racing game on the snes)
super mario all stars + super mario world(classics)
street fighter 2 turbo(best fighting game and sf on the snes)
starfox(uses super fx chip, some framerate issues on pal snes)
    super punchout(good fun)
    yoshis island (smw2)
zelda a link to the past (this is a must buy, one of the best games ever)
f-zero (one of the best racing games on the snes, uses mode7 gfx)
Mickey mania + the magical quest (very good platformers, hard to finish)

I'll throw in the sidescrolling beat'em-ups, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 4: Turtles in Time (SNES). Alternatively, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Hyperstone Heist (MD). They're technically two different games, but share quite a bit, as they're both based on the arcade title, Turtles in Time, differing with some levels and enemies.

They're both limited and repetitive, I suppose, as you're using three buttons at most (I think the MD version has the run mapped to a button instead of a spurt thing as in the SNES version), but I still find them very enjoyable and there's enough meat there to get a good hour's game, with some fun replay value. Pretty much all you can ask from a decent arcade title, I guess.
