Anyway, my point is that it should be CPO'd for a greater societal good if the developer/owner is leaving it idle.

Well we owned it when it was a hotel and sold it then bought it back and sold it to the comers so it would be a scandalous waste of money to buy it back off them now again.

It's a pity, because GMIT's main focus was to turn it into a hotel that is run by students - all of the hospitality people would do their work experience in there rather than looking elsewhere and people would be able to avail of it for a discount.

I seem to remember that they offered a piece of land they own closer to the water in lieu of some of the payment, but this was refused.

It would be great to turn back the clock and reopen as a hotel . Surprised Comers havent got moving on some plans guess they have bigger fish to fry. GMIT the obvious buyer not sure if they could run a hotel though..student accomm likely. They have 20 + acres in Murrough doing nothing for years but access there is a problem . Think the site will be rezoned in latest dev plan Galway City draft one 2017-23 extract below
    • CI lands on the Dublin Road, formally Corrib Great Southern Hotel site. A minimum of one third of the site
shall be reserved for higher educational use, and/or research/collaborate ventures between higher
education institutes and industry. Notwithstanding this, higher education use and/or student
accommodation will be open for consideration on the remainder of the lands. Retail shall be restricted to
bulky goods retailing and local retailing needs. Given the significant scale of the site and obligation to
deliver certain uses, an overall plan will be required in advance of any redevelopment, which shall
incorporate retention of the green linear space running parallel with the Dublin Road. The plan may include
the setting back of the green space to facilitate space required by the Council to accommodate
    sustainable transportation measures.

Corrib - A 7 acre site on the Dublin Road, Galway, Planning sought for 500 plus apartments.
Is this the same and one as the Corrib site?
