I might possibly have a job in Tallaght but its temporary (6 months) so after its finished I'm not sure what part of Dublin I'll be working, but probably city centre. Would anyone have advice on where to rent a house, as it what area? I'm not from Dublin so I'm not sure about buses/luas/traffic etc on different routes. In fact I'm totally lost with the whole thing!
Can anyone recommend an area close to city with easy (and cheap!) travel to Tallaght every day, or would I be better off just renting out there for the short time?

    Whereabouts in Tallaght is it?

Red Line Luas goes to near the Square. While you have the 54a bus that goes through Harolds Cross, etc... and the 27 which goes up through Cork St, Crumlin, Walkinstown, etc...

thanks Gavin. It would be near Village Green. I have a car but I wouldn't want to spend hours in traffic every morning. For example, do you know if I tried to rent a place in Ranelagh or Rathmines would it be hard to get to Tallaght from there? Or maybe I'd be better off living in Tallaght altogether and if I got a job in the city after I could go from there...it seems quite far out for nights out etc though...

Nah, Tallaght's not that far out. €15-€20 taxi after a night out. 30 minutes on the bus.

General rule for Dublin traffic is that it goes into the city in the morning and out of the city at night. So if you're driving from Rathmines/Ranelagh to Tallaght in the morning, you'll encounter very little traffic.

you will get traffic on the N81 in the mornings especially around the school times and traffic going on to the sth and Nth M50 so you would need ot give yourself time use the luas and walk down to Village green it only takes a few mins Plenty of buses going on the route as well seeing you have a car drive out and look around Its not exactly going to Mars Print yourself an AA map and try the routes out and see what suits you and live where you feel you are comfortable with Taxi in and out a few nights over the weekend well can put a hole in the pocket:)

I'd consider that pretty expensive! It used cost me 17-20 for a taxi in my old place. If you're doin that a couple of nights a week, it's a lot!
What about soemwhere along the bus routes, eg Crumlin, Dolphins Barn, so you have the option to bus or drive. as Seamus said, you'll be going against the traffic, it won't be so bad, but it'll also leave you closer to city centre for socialising.

if you were only going to move to tallaght for the lenght of this job that would be a lot of hassel to move for just 6 months and then looking to move again - also i think most places would want you to take a years lease.

if you were to live in Ranelagh/Rathmines you could get the 65/65B busses that go up through rathmines and directly out the square - as far as i know they go through the village.

if you were to live in Tallaght full time, you would have options of a good few busses and luas to get you into city centre for work if that was where your next job would be.
Inchicore is on luas line and not to far from town -so would be handy for both tallaght and city centre

I would advise you to rent on the Luas line and not have to rely on the bus. Especially the 65 routes which I remember it being bad journey and unreliable service during peak hours. (I was brought up in Killinarden).

There are also pleasant areas in Tallaght to rent in (Tallaght Village, Ailsbury, Old Bawn etc) which would mean much cheaper rent and walking to work but still realtively good access to town (15-20 quid taxi or 50 minutes on the Luas).

Luas Red Line areas to look at would be Inchicore/Kilmainham, Fatima, Rialto, South Circular Rd area, and Drimnagh would be plenty of options if you searched these.

Luas from Fatima to Tallaght takes me about 30 mins on the Luas.

Tallaght is 10 -15 minutes from the city if your driving so it being far out is a falsehood by folks who dont know the city.

Ive found this quite apparent with lads and lassies not originally from dublin so they flock to areas like Rathmines.

You'll find good accommodation in rathmines to be expensive, average accommodation to be above average prices and bad student digs to be cheap but exactly what you paid for if not worse.

So in terms of rent and petrol / bus fares if you want to swallow it you can and live closer to the city.

Alternatively you can get cheaper rent closer to work in tallaght or surrounding areas. Most apartments in Tallaght are 4 years old and there is an abudence. Rent is cheaper, The Luas runs directly from it and there is an abundance of buses running all over the place from the square.

You can certainly get to and from town to socialise on week /end night. The luas is 40 minutes tops to jervis or you can get a 25/30 minute bus to the southside city direct from the square.

It depends what you want and what your looking for. Personally i prefer to walk to work as traffic grates me. I safe my petrol for the weekends.

    best of luck
