Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Hello all,
I just got the all clear at work to use the Bike To Work scheme and I am looking to get a new road bike up to the 1000euro allowed.I am from Cork (Hence the name!) so I am looking to try in places like Edge Fitness and Victoria Cycles. The problem is that I am new to cycling and hope someone will advise what to get. I have seen Boardman bikes in Halfords and in my LBS ones like Claude Butler. Its probably all a matter of opinion at the end of the day but I want to have some idea what at least to be looking for.Maybe someone might look at those sites or some other shops site and give me a few that would be good to look out for. I presume at this price there won't be much betwen the main ones but I don't know really!!

    Thanks in advance!

For that price range you should get the following:

    decent aluminium frame
shimano gears/shifters, rear cassette should be a 10-speed Tiagra or 105 or equivalent SRAM (Rival, I think)
    carbon fork
    maybe a carbon seat-post

Allow budget for proper road pedals and shoes and some padded lycra shorts, maybe a helmet.

After that, its just a matter of price, taste and fit. All the big names will be fine: Giant, Trek, Lapierre, Specialized, Cannondale etc.

Take your time, try them out. The bike shop should spend time with you, helping you pick a bike. It they don't, shop elsewhere or go on-line.
