I understand what you're saying but have you at all considered the possibility you're getting a discount for buying longer periods of motor tax rather than being penalised for buying shorter?

Is this the same discount that you get for paying yourincome tax yearly instead of weekly/monthly?

If you can afford to pay a larger amount of money upfront then you get a discount, if you cannot afford then you get penalised,,, this tax favours someone who is better off..the tax is regressive.the tax is unfair.. I wouldn't mind paying a couple of euro for the "administration" but the extra you are charged is ridiculous..

    Seems good idea BUT

    Equivalent 2008 car = €13,000
Reduced car tax for 10 yrs = €3000
Interest on 16,000 loan at Bank of Ireland at 9% = €8321
Total cost to me €24,321 Euro .. just to drive on Irish roads .. no fuel in that.

    Ouch!

Instead of being fleeced by the Irish Minister for Finance,
I would be fleeced by the Bank of Ireland and paying their managers handsome bonuses.

    I Think Not!

Why would you be borrowign 10 years motor tax from the bank? Let alone doing it at the begining in a lump sum.

Motor tax is paid in advance, PAYE/income tax are paid as income is earned or later (adjustments may occur).

It's ok, I don't need a "lesson" on how the tax system in our country works

honestly no offence meant herre, however if you are paying 600e tax per yr
    1. what are you driving
    2. seriously consider downgrading/or more eco friendly
    3. no way out of tax
    4. dont be influenced by what friends have said they've done or not done you are responsible for your situation, why dont you go to mabs/ financial advisor et al
    5. to gain in one aspect of life(luxuries v's necessities) sacrifices may need to be made in order to get a balance in your life

i'm currently organising my finances for next yr looking at whats in and whats out, and no.1 out the door is my car 456 e tax per yr, petrol 03.
if cant pay the tax then car is idle why not sell and get more economical.
just and opinion not a judgement:)

You may be unaware of the rules re. preliminary tax; If all/most of your income is in Nov./Dec. then income tax needs to be paid in advance.

As a lot of people are struggling to pay certain bills/taxes at the moment, should the state not try and be a bit more flexible then normal and alter the way the car tax is charged. ie, don't penalise as much when paying 4 times a year or twice a year.
Why not have a similar system as house/car insurance where you pay a lump sum and then the remainder over 9 months at a smaller amount.
I am sure people would be pay up if they feel the governement are recognising their plight.

For this reason I find paying car tax and house oil so difficult. Not looking for sympathy but just a bit of flexiblity from the state.

What if they sell the car during the year? Who picks up the tab?

The person who buys it obviously

What if that person does not have it on the road? Why should he then pay?

I can see too many admin issues for it to work. You would have people transferring tax, claiming refunds. It would be a nightmare to operate.

then that person has to declare it off the road
It could be easily done with a 3 month payment in advance then a monthly direct debit, you get a tax disc for 3 months and then every 3 months as long as your direct debit is being paid
Your direct debit would always be 2 months in advance, A simple software program to check you're up to date on payments and to process tax disucs is all it would take

It is there job to administer, I don't have much faith though in state services, take the passport office in dublin for one.

That is why people get so cheesed off as it appears to me that when you are on the breadline your costs increase. Car tax pre 2008( approx 200E more on average than post 2008), nct every year (over 10 yr cars ,55 E more) paying car tax 4 times a year(11% extra). It all adds up to ridiculous levels.
