Have the MP3 player since the start of the year, but I lost the original cable and bought a cheap replacement of ebay. This worked grand until yesterday when every computer I connected it to said 'USB device not recognized'. Is it possible the cheap cable could be the problem?

Hmm, maybe it's a problem with the cable like you said, but I'd say there's been a malfunction and the mp3 player needs to be re-formated. when you plug it into your computer try clicking > find > type 'disk utility' and see if your mp3 player shows up in the disk utility at all, if you can access it then format it and see what happens

Sometimes when you disconnect an mp3 player without properly clicking the bottom right green arrow icon that says 'safely remove device' - it messes up the mp3 player and requires a reboot.

Solved this, bought a genuine cable from the sony centre here, worked no problems. Not cheap them cables though!

    Cheers for the input anyways.

in other words Sony is using a proprietary cable. ff'ng hate proprietary cables, especially ones that look like normal cables!

Well the connection is proprietary definitely, don't know what the problem was with the cheap one. Might open it see if theres broke solder joints or anything.

it was probably wired differently inside, even though it looked the same on the outside....

    Broken cable most likely.
