Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

The Great Replay

Given the nostalgia recently, with GTAIII being ten years old, the trailer for the new game revisiting San Andreas (well, part of San Andreas anyway) and all this talk about Tommy Vercetti from Vice City, anyone going to replay any of the old games? It's a hectic time for all this nostalgia with Christmas Games rush upon us. I was going to pick up Uncharted 3 this evening, but thinking now of getting it as a Christmas present and playing it over Christmas, and replaying San Andreas for the next week or so (until Assassin's Creed: Revelations comes out)

I downloaded SA ages ago from Xbox Live and played some of it, but not a lot. Beginning of games like this are always tough to deal with second time round as you know the fun that lies ahead, but have to go through small missions first. But going to give it a shot this weekend anyway.

Just thought this could be a thread for anyone replaying the old games to post their experiences, what they did different this time round, how do the games hold up now, or just as a pure nostalgia thread.

Was gonna buy San Andreas on XBL. What's it like playing it on the 360? Does it run ok? Just started GTAIV again but really couldn't be arsed with it :pac:

Been a while since I played it, but seemed alright. Just weird stepping down graphics-wise. Doesn't help that when I used to play San Andreas, it was on my 14" telly. Then I played it a little bit on a 26" when I downloaded it on XBL. Now I have a 42". Seemed to run okay though

Will have a play through GTA IV series, install disk is missing for Vice city, don't know what happened my San andreas, Still have 3 but couldn't get into it last time I played it, it's just aged to much.

Just got a HD projector too, I'm still trying to get the 3D working on it though. Games look amazing on it.

Was going to download and play SA, but as it's 1200 points now it would cost €18 to download it. I remember it was 800 points a while back :(

Just played for a few hours there. Runs ok for the most part. Few bits where the dialogue is ahead of the cutscene, and sometimes theres a bit of screen wobble, but generally it runs fine. Nothing that'd ruin the game.

I'll say this though, anyone who complains about the driving in GTA:IV needs to replay this or Vice City. Much harder to control. Trying to reverse is a pain as you have to hold LB, RB and LT. Aiming guns is also a lot harder. It'll just take a bit of getting used to though. But just did the first mission where you meet OG LOC (forgot how funny he was) where you have to hop on a motorbike and chase another guy through tight alleys and hills. Seriously hard to control at any type of speed. Again, something you'd get used to though. Can't remember having much trouble when I used to play it regularly.

Looking forward to getting a bit further into it and seeing all the old characters again rather than just Sweet, Ryder and Big Smoke

I was tempted to start GTA IV again today but after reading this thread I might just set up my PS2 and go back through GTA 3, Vice City and San Andreas.

Currently playing TBOGT as TLAD isnt great. And just started UC3 so will leave TBOGT and come back to it. Great DLC though

I always found it really hard to go back on GTA after playing a newer version. The shooting, handling etc gets on my nerves.

All things considered, every game was an improvement on before in general playability.

Fully agree. I'm getting more used to it now (just finished Los Santos and doing the countryside missions now), but the handling and shooting controls were vastly improved in GTAIV. And whatever about variety of gameplay, the step from SA to GTAIV in terms of graphics is astonishing. Obviously, that's to be expected, but Liberty City in IV is definitely one hell of an achievement

I bought them all on Steam a good while ago when the deal was on,

But i had never played them on the PC since the overhead early versions, I don't want to use the mouse and keyboard, and I don't have a pad that works 100% with all the controls,

I have given up at this stage :(

I'd forgotten all about Inside Track Betting, where you could bet on the horses. Made a good bit of money over the weekend. I have a vague memory of flying the fighter jet from the airfield to the betting shop in Los Santos to go betting. Used to always save at the airfield and fly the fighter jet wherever I needed to go after I finished the game.

Just got into San Fierro last night. Never really liked San Fierro, wasn't much to do. Had the gang territories in Los Santos and the gambling in Las Venturas, but nothing of note in San Fierro, that I can remember anyway.

Ruined the first countryside mission I did at the weekend too. The one where there's a witness living halfway up Mt.Chiliad you have to kill. Since I was halfway up after killing him, I went up to the top and jumped off. Forgot how to open the parachute and by the time I pressed the button, it couldn't open in time. Splat!

I actually like the san fierro missions, I like getting the Wang Cars garage or doing the Valet mission and stitching up the DA. Meeting Wu Zi Mu for the first time or working for, then killing Jizzy B. :D

Hated the Zero missions with a passion though.

Missions are probably alright, just nothing to do in the city. I did always like Wu Zi Mu though, for some reason he was always one of my favourite characters, even though I can't remember him being particularly funny or anything.

Favourite mission I've done so far is where you have to steal a limo, collect Madd Dogg's manager, then drive him off the pier. Always loved that mission

Have you ever flown to Caligula's at the start of the game to play a bit of blackjack? Potential to make 1000's, getting back home with it can be a problem though ...

Nah, prefer not to use cheats and to play the game properly, until I complete it of course. Not worth the hassle as jobs start paying a bit more so I don't really need a lot of money. ITB sorts me out when I'm running low.

Haven't played this in a few weeks due to the November games rush, but hopefully crack back into it the week before Xmas. Think I'm close to unlocking the desert, which means pilot school and jetpack coming soon hopefully

Not a cheat, but tricky & of debatable usefulness. Just park your car next to the hut at the gate of LSX, climb over the hut, go back out for your car if you want & in you go & steal a plane.

Probably best if you pick up a parachute 1st from the top of the US Bank tower or somewhere.

Then fly north, bail out above the casino, land beside the door & get your ass to the tables sharpish. You won't get shot while playing games, only when moving between tables/machines, so if you're not too greedy (or unlucky), you can pocket a useful amount & still be in good enough shape to get to LV airport & hopefully make it home (the flood channel near CJ's house makes a good landing strip).

Only managed it once myself, mind & it was more for the challenge & a bit of a laugh after I'd already completed the game

Jumping the gate of the Marina in Vice City (creative use of motorbike & car transporter) at the start of the game while the bridges are closed & taking a spin in a boat is also fun. You have to know where to find the truck, mind & get it out of its confined location ...
