Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    I have

well at least for the next 3-5 years. Other things to focus on, getting fit, well, university etc

I decided 2 months ago that I wasn't getting much out of it, like how i used to as a kid being able to pour unthinkable hours into the GTA'S, FF'S and MGS'S of yore.......it just got frankly boring and samey

so i went into smyths traded in my collection, except a few choice games, i'll probbaly want to show to grandkids and such and played one last FINAL game that I really foundly remembered:

    Final Fantasy 10 on the PS2, 2001.

I complete it this morning, and I got to tell you people, its pure art!:D

After 50 hours, i sat back and thought well I haven't played anything (as a whole) as emotionally charged in 10 years

this is no rose tinted glasses, storytelling and the medium of gaming has stagnated and probably moved backwards(yes bioshock is dung).

Mods don't move, i put it in after hours to get a wider section of the boards .ie users population.

Not once. Especially with the new GTA on the way.

Another chance for mindless violence and immature humour.
It's good for the soul. Kind of. . .

No way. Although as I get older the type of game I play is changing.

Congrats on your reason for not moving it being one of the reasons for moving it given in the charter :D

Also online multiplayer has given certain genres a lot more appeal in my eyes, they say games have gotten easier but multiplayer is the most challenging aspect of any game.

No it's nothing but rose tinted glasses. Gaming hasn't got worse, stagnated or any of that nonsense.
    You just got old.

So yeah, cleanse your palate by taking a break, when you eventually come back you'll probably appreciate the games you'll play a lot more.
Or you'll still think as you do now, so you can go onto the games subforum where complaining that games now can't live up to your embellished memories is practically mandatory.

I've taken breaks, during which I haven't played anything for a couple of months at a time. (DS doesn't count, right?)

But with so many delicious new PC games on the horizon; Diablo III, The Old Republic, etc, I'm building myself a new monster machine in preparation for when I voluntarily turn into a social hermit.

Yes I gave up video games a few years ago. Don't play them on my pc any more but do play games the odd time on my DS but they are educational games though!

i usually play games for the story, music, art and not the multiplayer............. So many games are moving away from split screen multiplayer in the same room, which is just simply irreplacable in terms of sheer fun.

I remember 8 of us used to go over to our friends houses to play HALO with 2 xboxes and 2 television in separate rooms, one team in each room and the shouts we'd hear from one room as a grenade landed beside a player, and we'd know who it was :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,483 ✭✭✭Ostrom

Never. Playing 15 years now, no sign of slowing. Have had a few long stretches without playing (most recently 6 months), but just finished batman, got sonic generations last night, getting 3DS for xmas. Couldn't imagine ever quitting.

I do like online a lot but there is no debating the joy of splitscreen multiplayer the glory days before booze of staying over at my buddies playing mariokart, goldeneye and perfect dark. Me and a friend recently played the spec ops missions on MW2 had a great laugh so we decided to go out and get another game and continue the fun (great thing about being an adult, just being able to go out and buy a game whenever you want) but we couldn't find anything :( Wii sports is only good for so long. Still there is always Pro!

Skyrim, Arkham City, a new SSX. It would be the work of a madman to stop playing games now. A MADMAN. I've got a PS3 and an Xbox, and when I put the baby to bed, then I can dispense a brand of street justice that not only relaxes me, but also would get me a ten year sentence coupled with some strong remarks from the bench in real life.

Didnt know Smyths still accepted trade-in on PS2 games

But anyways op, you got ripped off :pac: if you wanna give up playing video games thats cool :) but you shouldn't of traded-in. Places would gladly give you 1 euro then resell the game on for 29.99.

I didn't decide to give up video games. I lost interest in them years ago. I still occasionally play a game online (this is great for instance) but I haven't bought a console or a computer game in years.

I have absolutely no interest in modern games. Those first person shooters or whatever they're called all look the same to me. Entering a room and shooting an alien or a soldier ad nauseum doesn't do anything for me. Give me Mario any day. As for remaking things like Sonic in 3D, they can piss right off.

You can't give them up now. You've still to do a Perfect Game & an insane challenge (e.g. OSGNSNCNDNBBNTQRSO, OSGNSNCNONIIENENNENBBRSONSC, NSGNSNCNONENNENBB
Yes, I just looked for some challenge names on GameFAQs :P - and yes, these are challenges, not random characters)
    )!
    I haven't done either..

oh no i traded in my ps3 games but kept the few ps2 and ps1 games i had, they're only sentimental value at this stage!

Well good :) least you kept them.
But you still should of sold your ps3 games on adverts or something. Hey, im speaking for experience man :) hence why I am vocal of this :P
I got ripped off when I traded in about 40 ps2 and xbox games a few years ago. They gave me a euro for each game. While they were selling the average PS2/xbox game for 19.99 / 24.99 / 29.99.

They still have the same greedy mentality today.
Uncharted 3 came out of Wednesday. Now people paid 49.99 for that and some will be trading in after a few days. They'll only get 25 euro (at best.. most likely 21 euro) and Uncharted 3 pre-owned will be sold for 46.99 euro (yes, something like 3 euro cheaper than brand new)

Dotrel makes an important point (comic book guy video 1 page back).

The only thing thats really to be feared is turning into a basement dwelling comic book guy, well, that or dying like that guy who played for days on end.

Put what age you are roughly in your answer. Me - late 20's, gave up gaming years back, except for a few months where command and conquer took over my life, its like crack to me, I literally crunched up the disc and put it in the bin for my own good.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,165 ✭✭✭Savage Tyrant

Yeah, I'm definitely never going to waste another single minute or hard earned euro on video games ever again. So childish and a useless waste of money.
I think my life will be all the better for it actually. I'm at peace with the decision.

Sorry, what? .... Elder Scrolls Skyrim? ... Next week you say? ... Oh well, fûck that then.

I'll never give them up. EVER!!

I may lose interest in modern releases (except Skyrim, waiting 4 years for that bugger to come along) but I'll never quit gaming.

I still get a kick out of playing older classics on Snes, Arcade, Mega Drive, N64, PC, etc so even if I get bored with the gaming industry today I'll still fall back on the oldies.

Right now I'm playing Doom 1 for the buzz :pac:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,605 ✭✭✭Fizman

I find I have a gaming 'season'. My PS3 will gather dust from around May - Oct, then Nov - Apr I'll get stuck back into it. 28 now and I really don't have the endless hours available to put into it anymore, as the OP mentioned. I loved getting deep into games of the past like Zelda, GTA and some of the older RPGs that demanded time to enjoy, but these days I'm more likely to play a more pick up n play game such as Uncharted, FIFA, or a FPS.

One thing I do miss mind, and thinking of looking into again is PC gaming. I bought a monster rig 4 years back for over €2k but never really took advantage of it. Many a time in the past I burned the midnight oil staying up playing Command and Conquer or some FPS.

Now things like girls, jobs, training etc take up the majority of time.

However, GTA 5 has got my attention. :o

    oh yeah

    loads of times

These days I try to only play games I enjoy and feel like I've been having fun after playing though - Team Fortress 2 for example. Some games I would play compulsively for ages. Afterwards I would like I'd done some work and needed to relax :/ Civilization, x-com...lots of those large scale repetitive strategy games with moronic AI.

    L.A Noire says "s'up!".

L.A. Noire was boring, at least from a game play point of view, it was basically an old text game that just looked really pretty and had true to life faces. It was not that good.
