Can anyone tell me what is the best way to NUI Maynooth from Donegal Town on Friday and from Donegal Town to NUI Maynooth on Sunday

never driven to maynooth but looking at a map it looks shorter going...
    donegal,
    pettigo,
    enniskillen,
either way to cavan little difference in it. lisnaskea has less traffic, but derrylin is shorter
virginia, (either side of this town you will find speed guns)
m3 to dunboyne and cut across

the sligo, carrick on shannon etc road is better but there is so much more traffic on it until the duel carrigways start proper in longford means it is impossible to make good time... what i would aim for... if you arent in a rush go sligo, for time go via enniskillen. id expect half an hour in the difference if you know the pettigo road

just to say if your not driving, most seem to get McGeehans to/from Dublin and the train to Maynooth. (sunday @ 3 from donegal, Fridays 1 & 5 from dublin. if your not on one of these it will take over a hour longer).... if you can drive, take the car... the eco approach really isnt worth bus eireann's torture

After doing the journey for three years I would definitely recommend the Sligo route. The roads are much better the entire way down and as to traffic, you might hit a bit in Sligo but that's about the height of it.

No way Enniskillian is much shorter and less fuel

But you don't have to travel that god awful road between Donegal town and Pettigoe. I wouldn't say its much shorter, the Sligo route has better roads and also has a drive through KFC along the way! Beats that Mc Donalds in Cavan any day.

I found I went much harder on the Sligo way just to do it in the same time as the North, But thats just me

there is a drive thru kfc in cavan. if you swing into cavan town at the dublin roundabout its 100m down the road.
ya can also go to enniskillen via ballyshannon, better road very little time difference... i just enjoy driving the pettigo road for some reason but it is awful if your in something like a vw bora or a 4x4 that rolls.... or hungover.

wouldnt bet on it being less fuel, lots of braking and accelerating back to speed where most fuel is used. you would sit at a constant speed on the sligo route (and i find usually behind someone which will also boost your fuel efficency)

If you go by Enniskillen, be sure to go by Derrylin and Bellturbet to Cavan rather than by Lisnaskea which can be a botlleneck (as can Enniskillen if you take the Belfast road), then take the new M3 from Kells to Dublin, and get off at Dunboyne, then take the R157 from Dunboyne the Maynooth.. thats the best way in my experience

As someone who often drives to north kildare a lot from Letterkenny I would find the Eniskillen route a bit faster and less consumption on petrol than the Sligo route although I have to agree with posters saying the road through Sligo is far better road.

god had to go the sligo way today seen as i was going nearish mullingar. exact same milage to dublin but took me a hour longer to cover the distance. il be slagging this road even more from now on! just too much traffic on it for single carrigeway, especially along longford

Well i head down to Carbury Co Kildare alot, I have to pass through Mullingar to get to it. I still would normally go the Eniskillen route. Usually at Cavan I take the road down past Granard and then to Edgesworthstown, then on to Mullingar.
There is also another road you can take that misses Granard and Edgesworthstown that takes you through Castleplollard, but i find both these routes almost identical in time.

I live in Ballyshannon and have been driving to Maynooth for a good few years. The sligo route is much better, hassle free, not likely to get caught behind a caravan for an hour. Better again if you want to save 20 mins and liven up a bit of a boring drive is to turn off at Bundoran through Kinlough, Manorhamilton (R280), Leitrim village and you pop out the other side of Carrick on Shannon. Lovely drive but only in good weather and daytime.
