Another Obafemi Martins type player so it it? There is no way he is 27! Or Doumbia is 24 for that matter:D

There's a question mark over a lot of West African footballers.

I'm not sure if there is one over the age of Papiss Cisse though:)

Jesus, and if its for the 7.5m fee youd wonder what LFC are doing. The only way passing up on an opportunity like that would be acceptable is if we go out and sign a Sow or Podolski etc. I'm not expecting a Cavani type signing or anything but if we do end up paying the same amount for Defoe as Newcastle do for Cisse its embarrassing.

Funny thing is that there is as much if not more ****e talk about English players, and most of them develop into nothing players. A quick look at our own youth set up/reserves over the past 10 years or so pretty much points this out. Every season we have the same rubbish about how Young English player X in the reserves will be a star. Then three or four years later that guy is in the Championship or lower. A couple of years back Ince was our next star winger in waiting, now we have Sterling, and no doubt in two years time we will have another star winger that is just about to make it.

Good point, and something that cracks me up - remember all the fuss about the sides that got into 3 Youth Cup finals in 4 years a while back? Paul Anderson & Adam Hamill were going to sort out our right & left wing slots for years!!! Strikers like Mellor, Lindfield & Dalla Valla have all come and gone without becoming the next Fowler. Pacheco was similar, as were the great hopes Le Tallec & "Cinema" Pongolle! Players like Darby, Hobbs, Antwi & Otsemobor never made the first team squad as they were tipped to do, to name just a few. I'm probably forgetting loads.

We have an appalling record at bringing through promising youngsters - I think Spearing is about all we have to show for the last decade. I really hope we do better with Kelly, Sterling, Shelvey, Flanagan, Robinson, Suso, Coady, Wisdom, Gulacsi, Eccleston, Amoo etc. Easier said than done of course, but could save us a fortune in the transfer market.

    Very true .

But i hold more hope with Rodolfo Borrell producing the goods.

Didnt Pep Guardiola say something along the lines recently that if he was a young player choosing a club then he would go to Liverpool with Borrell being there .

Personally when i get excited by the potential of a academy/reserves player i think of Richie Partridge and it soon brings me back to earth

I thought Pongolle was sold off too quickly. He was one of the best foreign 'prospects' Houiller brought in even if there was alot of hype about himself and Le Tallec at the time.. Super role he played in that Olympiakos game

And afaik Jon Ostembor did make a few first team appearances in the league. Remember him playing against Newcastle in 03/04:confused: though he drifted off the radar as soon as the injuries of the other right backs cleared up... I hope the same thing wont happen to Martin Kelly (but hes probably better player at this stage)

Pep Guardiola declaro "la academia del Liverpool es la unica que puede competirle a "La Masia" del Barcelona FC."

    Translates as:

Pep Guardiola declared "the Liverpool Academy is the only one who can compete at" La Masia "of FC Barcelona."

High praise indeed - hope it produces a few club legends.

He made 4 or 5 first team appearances alright & still plays in League One I think. Didn't help that he got shot in the ar$e though....

Have high hopes for Kelly, hope he goes on to become a lynchpin in the defence for years.

I'm not sure. I still find it strange Newcastle refused to comment about the alleged release clause. Normally a club would come straight out and deny it

Seamu$ you have named players across a whole decade. Then you name about 10 current players who might have a chance of making it. That is the whole point. The academy has gone thanks to Rafa from having one or two eggs in the basket to having a proper basket full.

In fairness, the likes of Fowler and Owen both coming through the ranks within the same decade is almost unheard of. We will produce good technical players in defence and midfield but unlikely to produce quality like Fowler or Owen up front. It was like winning the lottery getting those 2 through the youth ranks. Fingers crossed that Sterling might be of similar quality.

Flanagan, Kelly and Shelvey (bought for a pittance) will be regulars in a couple of years with Spearing to be a well-used squad player for years to come. I think that's a good return. Maybe Robinson and Coady might come good too. We'll get 500-750k for Eccleston soon enough from a championship outfit. Now's that's not bad business.

Some of those guys you mentioned were Houllier no-hopers, and we still might get £1m for Pacheco from a midtable Spanish side. That would be good business.

With the coaching setup we now have in the Academy and the Reserves, we have a good foundation to develop players in a way a lot of other clubs are not. Borrell and Segura bring with them vast amounts of knowledge in how to develop young players in a certain manner and to get them to play a certain way.

There is a pressure on them to bring through players given their own pasts at Barcelona but, if we can get 3 first team regulars from the current batch of Reserves and U-18s in the next 5 years then we should consider it a resounding success.

We have some talented players, but the way youth team football is set up in England they won't have a chance to develop in the manner that they do on the continent. The Reserve league in particular is such a ridiculous and archaic system in comparison to both Germany and Spain where they play competitive games week in week out.

I've decided that the only reason we aren't in for Cisse (who was affordable, is excellent and who practically begged Liverpool to bid for him) is because we have Cavani lined up.

That's it. Mind made up. Talk to yiz on Feb 1st.

    http://www.thisisanfield.com/2012/01/gerrard-is-key-to-ignite-carrolls-career/

Gerrard is key to ignite Carroll’s career

Andy Carroll believes the return of Steven Gerrard to Liverpool’s first team will provide the spark he needs to kick start his Reds career. Carroll has struggled in terms of goals since his £35million move from Newcastle last January, but due to injuries to both players, has rarely played with Gerrard.
Gerrard recently returned from injury after being out since October and Carroll says the captain’a return gives not only him, but the rest of the squad a huge boost.
In fact, Carroll and Gerrard have only played in the same team nine times.
Carroll said, “We haven’t had the chance to start many games together.
“I think I may have been a sub when he’s started or he has been a sub when I have so it’s nice to see him back.
“When you’re on the same team as him in training, some of the passes he puts through for you and the chances he creates are incredible really.
“So hopefully I can keep working hard, get a nice run of games, give some good performances and get a few goals.
“If I can get a good run, hopefully that can kick-start me on again.”

why did this irritate me ?
