    Hey guys,

Quick one on the PR course with work experience offered by Fitzwilliam. I'm just wondering if anyone on here has done it and would you recommend it. I have over 6 years experience in online marketing and just wondering would a person be starting off be on a pretty low salary for a while going into an agency or in-house, and what the opportunities in Ireland are like in general. I know times are tough but apparently 95% or so of people going into the course get kept on by their companies.

Other option is to apply for an internship to companies directly.

Are people who do the course generally in their 20s, or is it all age groups? Presume there is a big spread but interested to hear about this.

Do you really need to do the course though? Like everything, PR is moving online. While traditional media is still quite important, my view is that you should be concentrating on developing the PR skills gained in your current role and marketing yourself as a Social Media/Online PR specialist.

Sorry to disagree with intouch, but getting a foot in the door is the biggest challenge in this industry. A course with an internship is one of the best ways of doing it. The move online may hurt some consultancies but it will not mean a shift to freelance for the bulk of work. Most agencies have figured out where the market is moving and are moving to take account of that.

Do you think? I've come across some amazing talented people who have never even considered a PR course and on top of it, I've successfully made the move into PR without having a formal qualification.

In my opinion, your contacts and your experience are the two most important things to get work at the moment. I agree that internships are great for building relationships/making contacts, but that's it.

    Each to his own though!

Contacts and experience are key, but many people entering this industry are low on contacts, particularly media contacts. If you dont have that then the foot in the door is important.

Fair enough. On that basis, I agree with you. One could argue that with experience should come contacts, but that's for a different day. :D
