    Yes, for emergency treatment only.

At the moment, the medical card entitles you to one free check up per calendar year, plus two free fillings per calendar year. Scaling and polishing is no longer available free. Necessary extractions and pain treatment are free. Prior approval needs to be obtained from the HSE for other work - some, like emergency root canal on front teeth, is free but not for back teeth. The local Health Office will supply you with a list of local dentists who treat patients with medical cards. Check with dentist for what is free and what is charged.

Does anyone know does this include a check up for a child with a medical card?

No you have to be over 16 to be entitled to dental treatment on the medical card .

The HSE is obliged to provide dental services free of charge to:

Medical card holders and their dependants, but only under certain circumstances
People who have contracted Hepatitis C directly or indirectly from the use of Human Immunoglobulin-Anti-D or from the receipt within Ireland of any blood product or a blood transfusion and who have a Health Amendment Act Card,
Preschool children and school children attending state primary schools referred from child health service and school health service examinations.
Priority is usually given to children referred from child and school health services.

Dental services for children under 16 years of age who attend state primary schools and are referred from child and school health services are provided in Health Service Executive (HSE) clinics and in primary schools

Theres normally a 40 euro charge now for polishing.

Edit: Thats through the Medical card that the 40 euro charge applies

If you want to get into it, you got to get out of it. (Hawkwind 1982)
