Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

A brilliant star-like object outshining every other star in the sky was seen in the skies over Ireland on the night of November 9th, 2011. On the lower right hand side of the Moon Jupiter can be seen as a very bright star.

Jupiter comes close to Earth every year and once or twice the Full Moon will be near Jupiter each time. Jupiter is the largest planet going around the Sun. At 88,000 miles wide it is 11 times wider than the Earth. The Moon is tiny in comparison, only 2,160 miles wide, thatÕs 40 times less than Jupiter and one quarter as wide as Earth. However, the Moon is much closer at just one quarter of a million miles away whereas Jupiter is 370 million miles away. So itÕs really only a line of sight effect as Jupiter is 1500 times further away than the Moon.

    Any more pics out there???

I took this a few weeks ago, when the moon and Jupiter weren't quite so close:

    jupiter_moons_800.jpg

Sony A77, Sony 70-400 G lens at 400mm, 1/6 sec F5.6 ISO 1600 on a tripod using remote shutter release.

It's Jupiter (big bright one) with 3 of it's moons (sorry, I can't tell you which ones , but they're 3 out of Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto). You can't see them with the naked eye, so you'd need a telescope to see them - or in this instance, a long lens with a long exposure.

I only took the image to check for "ghosting" on the A77 (there isn't any). I must break out my proper telescope and finally try to get some decent planet shots with the camera mounted on it.

Got these last month, lacking any detail due to my kit lens, but hopefully be getting some sort of zoom in the new year :D

Took this last night, not great but my best moon photo so far.
I saw the moon on my way home from work but by the time I arrived home it was already dark so I shoot at f2.8, 1/60 second and ISO 200 at 200mm. Ideally I’d have a longer zoom lens so I could crop closer without losing detail.
