Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Steve McQueen
    Stan Laurel
    John Cazale

    Honourable mentions to:

    Robert De Niro
    Mick Lally (great stage actor)
    Groucho Marx
    Daniel Day Lewis
    Morgan Freeman
    Harvey Keitel

Btw Cazale appeared in 5 films, all of which were nominated for Best Film Oscar and married Maryl Streep before he sadly died of cancer at 42. Very underrated.

Denzel Washington, even his worst movies are made good by his acting
Daniel day Lewis same as Denzel.....
Brendan Gleeson not because he's a paddy but he's a genuinely good actor.......

He might be bat**** crazy, but Tom Cruise deserves a special mention

    Tim Robbins
Heath Ledger (I know his career wasn't very established, but I found him incredible in The Dark Knight, Brokeback Mountain and Monster's Ball)
Billy Bob Thornton (under-rated for his acting abilities, more known for being married to Angelina; check him out in Slingblade - amazing)
    Kevin Spacey

He is actually very good. He has great range, from the serious/arthouse (The Assassination of Jesse James, Fight Club, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, The Tree of Life etc, to the funny (Inglourious Basterds, Burn After Reading) to the blockbuster (Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Oceans 11 etc). He gets a bad rep unfairly IMO. He is definitely not shíte and has picked some excellent movies in recent years.

Anyway, my favourite 3 (not the greatest 3 necessarily, just my favourites):

    Leonardo Di Caprio
    Marlon Brando
    Christian Bale

Honourable mentions for Daniel Day-Lewis, Philippe Noiret, Gerard Depardieu, Russell Crowe, Clint Eastwood, Humphrey Bogart, Jack Nicholson, Jean Reno, Al Pacino, James Stewart, Robin Williams, Denzel Washington, Harrison Ford, Vincent Cassel. I could probably go on and on and on really :pac:

    3- Paul Newman

Jack Nicholson (Easy rider, One flew over the cuckoos nest, The departed).
Ed Norton (American history X, Fight club, 25th hour).
Samuel L Jackson (Jules Winnfield is probably my favourite film character of all time).

    Ooh yeah, <3 Ed Norton.

Damn you OP for limiting us to just three! :pac:

I can't believe I'm the only person who mentioned Richard Burton. You are just in awe of the guy when he's on screen. He did the longest run of Hamlet in history on broadway. An absolute legend and one of the best actors ever. He would be one of my dinner guests if I could ever have one of those dead people dinner parties.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 5,671 ✭✭✭BraziliaNZ

No mentions of Peter O'Toole or our very own Richard Harris - I can't believe people have Johnny Depp in this list, he doesn't deserve to be in the same thread as the legends of old!
I love this picture, his face tells a life story

Burton's depiction of O'Brien in Nineteen Eighty Four is possibly the most perfect understanding of a complex character I have ever seen.

It's spot on. He died soon after filming that, maybe even before it was released.

He wasn't even 59 - and looked a lot older.

The man did love to party. :pac:

Bridges wasn't bad in 'Crazy Heart' either and of course he made the 'Dude' an eternal legend, so he's in the top three.

Doesn't necessarily have to be all film actors I presume, so I'd have to give a place to James Gandolfini for creating another memorable character in Tony Soprano.

Final place is difficult to decide as it depends on if you pick individual performances or careers, some of the former being obliterated by poor choices in the latter (eg deNiro, Pacino, Walken, Nicholson), but I guess Clint would bag the third honor in my opinion

Serious lack of mentions for Christian Bale.
The amount of hours of dedication he gives to every role is uncanny.
Plus he made The Batman cool again which wasn't easy after George Clooney's nipple suit.

He's not the greatest actor in the world in technical terms, but like many of the great actors, he's extremely watchable... in the same way the likes of George Clooney and Robert Redford are.

Not everyone is a Daniel Day Lewis in the extremes they go to with their roles & quite frankly, but there's no doubt that he's one of the biggest screen icons of the last 20 years
