Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. Yeah very classy, thanked everyone he possibly could

Deserved award and unless Messi can find a young Xavi clone holed up somewhere in La Masia I wouldn't be surprised if he wins it again next year. Lots of football to watch the best in the world play until then though

Sorry, didn't think anyone would get upset about calling a multi millionaire footballer classy

He did indeed derserve it, without question

He said, Fúck Messi and boards Ireland

    Uncalled for

    Completely uncalled for.

It's crap like that, that makes him difficult to like for a lot of people.

Yea so difficult to like that's why he has 140,000,000 followers on Facebook and 35m followers on twitter......

    Award fully deserved.

    So much cringe.
It was a nice speech, and with the son coming up, and all. But why did he have to do that?

Apart from the award turning into a joke in general, it's also flawed in the sense that it is based on a calender year as opposed to season to season. Surely if every major league in the world is summer to summer effectively, why isn't the award based on a seasons performance as opposed to, in theory, two half seasons? Due to this, the final 6 months of the previous calender year does have an influence on the following years award, and without a ball being kicked it gives Ronaldo a massive advantage to win it again next year. If Messi outperforms him for the next 6 months and finishes a goal behind him in the European Golden Shoe and Pichichi Trophy (since the award these days is seemingly based on nothing more than who scores more between the two), despite out-scoring Ronaldo by 8 in that time period, all people will remember is the fact Ronaldo won those two top scorer awards this year. And if the evenly matched in the scoring charts by Christmas next year, or Ronaldo is up by one or two in the league, advantage Ronaldo. All people will see/remember is Ronaldo won the top scorer awards this year and is up in the league again, despite Messi scoring more in the calender year. Either do it season to season or don't do it at all.

If Messi outplays him in 2015 he will win it. It's not just based on who scored more between the two. Ronaldo led madrid to Champions League glory.

I see it basically as a 1.5 season award, Ronaldo will be judged on all of last season and the first part of this season. The winner next year will be judged on all of this season and the start of next season

It was the same when Messi was winning it so it's hardly unfair

He "led" them to fcuk all. They won it, and he happened to be in the team. Pulled his usual "anonymous when he doesn't score" act in the final also (I'm aware he scored a meaningless penalty in the last minute). Of course, Messi will win it, but it gives Ronaldo a big advantage to start with

Out of curiosity, how would the La Liga scoring charts look between Ronaldo and Messi, if penalties weren't included? Genuine question. Ronaldo would be 4 or so up I assume, but does anyone know exactly?

I reckon Ronaldo would be down by a good few. It's one of the many ludicrous things people try to use against him that a lot of his goals are penalties.

    What about Messi?

Read that only 15.76% of Messi's goals were penos, compared to 37.66% of Ronaldo's.

Wait sorry those are the Ballon D'or stats. I can be so silly sometimes.

Well he's scoring at a silly rate this season, it's not like the majority of his goals are penalties. Real are simply creating loads of chances and winning penalties as a result. Without the penalties he's still scored more than Messi, and that's having played fewer games.

It's amazing though that this fascination with penalties is coming up this season when Messi isn't scoring them but Ronaldo is. Where was this talk in his other seasons with big goal tallys when I'm sure he scored his fair share? Yes, Real's penalty number so far is big for this stage of the season, but they create loads of chances so it's not that strange. Ronaldo is just a clinical penalty taker, people act like that's not a skill in itself.

I suppose you're right, he just happened to be in the team.

I'm sure it was nice for him to get a run out and his 17-goal tally, a record-high in European Cup/Champions League history, was a nice added bonus.

Real would have won it with or without him. He scored heavy in two hammerings of two Germans teams, a meaningless penalty in the final, and a load in a weak group they would have qualified from anyway. Not exactly dragging a team kicking and screaming over the line

To say about Ronaldo's Champions League campaign of last season that he just "happened to be in the team", is one of the more ridiculous things I've seen on this forum, and that's saying something.

Also, those "two German teams" that he scored heavy against just so happened to be a team that destroyed them in the semi-final on year previous, and the CL holders who many thought would retain their title! It was hardly two average teams ffs!

Yep, no doubt every one of those games there was a penalty to Real would have turned out the exact same if they were removed. Some solid maths though...

He was talking about their league stats earlier, and that's what I was talking about. Without pens Ronaldo has 18 goals in 16 La Liga games. But again why are we dismissing penalties? They still have to be scored.

There is nothing ludicrous about acknowledging that he scores an awful lot of penalties that skew his stats.

He has scored 10 penalties this year already, that is crazy.

I think its 8 in the league, Barcelona have 0 I think, and 12 overall, Barcelona have 2.

Point is, Real as a team steamrolled them with or without him. They had goals to spare against Schalke and Bayern, even without his goals. It's not like he was pulling the strings or grabbed them by the scruff of the neck and won the champions league for them. They would have done it regardless. When people say a player "led" a team to something, it tends to mean he was a pivotal central figure, whose influence and ability was the direct reason they won, without him they wouldn't have

When Ronaldo was injured for the 2nd leg vs Dortmund. Real collapsed & should have went out if Mykitaryan had his shooting boots on.
