just opened a currenceyfair.com a/c there. so now i want to open an a/c in australia before i head out so that i can transfer my money out before leaving here.
anyone have any experience of this?
can you get your hole in the wall card sent to an irish address so that you are ready to go once you have landed?
which bank offers the best services and cheapest bank charges?
i would be hoping to get a visa debit card, which australian banks do this?
any other relevant info that ye think might be of benefit.

You will be able to deposit money in etc, but to be able to take money out they will need to identity you (100 point check etc)

so you'll have to go in person etc

have a look here at ANZ's O/S opening criteria
    https://www.anz.com/personal/travel-foreign-exchange/forms/non-resident-application/?sourcecode_1=BTM014&httpReferrer=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.anz.com%2Funitedkingdom%2Fen%2Fpersonal%2Fmoving%252Daustralia%2Fchoose%252Dbank%252Daccount%2F&applyPath=https%3A%2F%2Fapply2.anz.com%2Frof

Also do a search on the forum, lots of people have asked this

You can do it with NAB - www.nab.com.au. We applied online and when we arrived we just had to pop in with our passports and pick up our cards. Once you've applied and it's granted, you can start depositing money but can't withdraw until you've arrived and proved identity etc.

Just a quick question: I was looking online and both ANZ Bank ($5) and Commonwealth Bank ($4) charge a monthly fee just for having an account which is a bit odd by Irish standards. So is this the norm in Australia? It says that with this fee you have the luxury of unlimited online and ATM transactions, which really is a load of bollocks as it should come as standard without any fee to enable such.

Are there any big Australian banks which dont charge this monthly fee?

I think I read somewhere that NAB (National Australia Bank) don't charge any monthly fees.. I could be wrong though! Worth checking out just to see.

Aye banks charge fees for everything over here.
They used to only allow 15 epfos (laser) transactions a month (free) but unlimited now

We're both with NAB and haven't had any issues. Really good online banking! Don't think there have been any fees charged either

When I opened my account with CBA, they waived the monthly account fee for me. Not sure how long it'll last, but they haven't charged me yet.
