    Hi guys,

We are looking at a house for sale at the moment, semi detached... the only thing is there is a small, square ESB (I guess its a substation???) literally beside the house. Its about the size of a garage and is dark green. There is a small driveway into it but it seems to join the side of the house we are looking at...

Should we be concerned about this??? The EA swears that the current owner looked into all this and got the ESB to do something to it so that there is absolutely no radiation whatsoever... However, as yuou can imagine Im suspicious.. particularly as the house seems v reasonably priced! Its a lovely house though..

So how can we find out for sure if its harmful?
Even if we ask the ESB surely they wont want to admit it if it is seeing as its adjoining the house???

This is unchartereed territory for us and we have no prior experience with ESB substations (if thats even what this is?) so any advice would be helpful

    Thanks so much!

Hey, you can call esb networks and quote the reference on the door if you have any questions about it. sounds like a unit sub.
i lived next to one for years and it nevered bothered me. It dosent release any harmful chemicals or anything like that.

It might make an annoying ''humming'' noise if there are transformers* inside. This noise might only be noticeable and annoy you at quiet times e.g at night. It's always good homework to check out the neighbourhood at different times of the day and night no matter where you move.

*Decepticons are much less noisy and make better neighbours apparently

It's perfectly safe. Chances are it's a 10kv sub that steps down voltage for domestic use. Every housing estate in the country has at least 1.

About a year ago there was a cable fault at one of those subs beside a house up the road here. It blacked out the neighbourhood.

ESB came in and tore up yer man's driveway and messed up his garden, they had to put in a new duct I think.

However they did a very good reinstatement.

    Hi marber1978,

This sounds like substation, but as mlmcelligott said above, you could contact ESB Networks with the reference number of the unit for confirmation.

ESB Networks are extremely conscious of their responsibility to provide a safe and secure electricity infrastructure with due regard to protecting people, property and the natural environment. They have a number of Safety Booklets downloadable from their website, which should address any concerns you have.

Hope this helps, and best of luck with the search for your new home.

    Thanks,

    David.
