Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    rather than outward appearance.

Just bought this gold (not my style at all), small, dumpy looking and rather worn old watch:

a watch that I probably will hardly ever wear.

    Why did I buy it?
    Because inside, there is this:

The only ever Russian chronometer spec (though not to COSC standards) movement, the Vostok 2809. This particular one is gold plated and in seemingly good nick, considering it's from the 60's.

So ...has anyone else ever bought a watch that they don't particularly like the looks of ...just for its mechanical properties? (Or am I the only lunatic who does that ?)

It looks like a vintage Omega. It could be cleaned up as a nice dress watch.

I'd say much more like a vintage Zenith movement copy B. Even down to the cam regulator which was their signature since the early 1900's all the way up to the 50's. Even down to the gear train arrangement it's pretty close.

I gather those Vostok 2809's can be regulated to a really high accuracy. I've never seen one in a nice case though, which is odd. Nice buy P :)

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

Due to the high manufacturing cost, the movment was only made for a few years during the late 50's - early 60's.

Unfortunately, dumpy/frumpy looking watches seem to have been all the rage back then.

Vostok only made cool, "mad men" - like 60's watches from the very late 60's onwards and the 2809 movement had been long since shelved then.

    Great Movement...that Zenith is stunning

Yeah W the movement is very similar. I was referring more to the face of the watch. Even how they produced the 12 looks almost like omega.
