    Hello everyone,

Does anyone know the ins and outs of advertising on the road side?

    Thanks

If you mean truck trailers in fields then as far as I know it is legal- for now. Some county councils are taking cases against farmers over it and rightly so- they're an eyesore in many parts of the country, especially Louth/Meath.

I'd say if the councils lose their cases it might be legislated for in the Dail as the land is zoned argi but they are using it for other purposes.

Otherwise advertising on motorways is generally not permitted.

I should add that if you have a business like a cafe then it is possible to have signage points towards it- just like you often see for roadside cafes / garden centres. I would think you'd have to get permission from the council first though.

I know if your planing on puting up a finger sign on a pole (even if the council dosnt own the pole) you first apply for planing permission and submit a application, ordanance maps, drawings to scale and the appropiate fee of course at a cost of about 500euro(in total) and if they grant permission you then have the honour of giveing them 750euros per year to have the sign up..
If you dont go through all this **** and expence, and just put up the finger sign, they may confiscate your sign that you paid 180/200 euro for and throw it in a depot somewhere and send you a letter telling you to apply for permission for same.....And the next day you will probably get a demand for commercial rates owed,,,,Yes they do want to take down your advertiseing sign, just to make sure you dont get any customers,so you can make a few pound and then give it to them in Rates,,,only in Ireland does this **** happen,,,and Kildare Co Co specialise in it im afraid....

I agree that the prices are ridiculous and the planning hoops are bull****. However I don't think business's should have the right to throw up a sign wherever they want.

What would be the consequences of something like putting a load of signs along a stretch of road, imagine you tied them over a bridge or overpass? Would it be simple confiscation, fees due, or litter fine? Would there be possibility of prosecution. This is without permission of course, just curious as there seems to be a lot of this type just thrown up with no sign of being permanent.

Just because business is tough at the moment, it doesn't give anyone the right to defecate all over the countryside with these signs.

Without permission there is 2 main things that can happen 1 the council will come and remove it or B) litter warden will remove it and issue you with a €150 litter fine. There is some areas less targeted than others by the local councils and litter wardens so if you are going to stick up signs without permission see if other businesses get away with it.

Those are the questions I have also. There are loads of signs around, loads, all on ESB poles and so on.
