We arrive in Melbourne 2nd December (2 girls)... we were thinking we'd just stay in a hostel over Christmas .. rates seemed ok but seriously adds up when ur staying for 28 nights .. We are looking at Base in St Kilda and it's coming in at €750 each for the month .. is this reasonable? Anyone think of anywhere cheaper but of decent quality/central location.. we considered looking at short term rentals too but don't even know where to start! We know we need to get this sorted soon!

Elwood is a short cycle from St.Kilda and considerable cheaper! Nice leafy part of the city too. Quiet with nice cafés etc. You can walk to Acland Street from there where there is plenty of nightlife too.

@Gingko .. How short is short? Could we walk it? We have friends based in St Kilda so it's our first choice since we only plan on staying until January!

St. Kilda is where all the backpackers settle temporarily. It is nice though. Beach, park, nightlife, cafés etc. It is good for a month for sure! I stayed there for a month myself in a backpackers on Carlisle Street. There's quite a few.

If your only staying for 4 weeks then hostel it yea! Lots of fun for sure! Regarding Elwood, it is nice as a longer term base. Short walk for me with my long legs! But maybe longish walk for many? Those neighbourhoods are very clear on google earth. :)
