Posting this on behalf of my mate. He's thinking of getting his first rifle. He is mad to get the 223 but a bit worried that it could be rejected as it's his first firearm. Should he start from rimfire and than apply for 223 in 6-12 months or would he be alright with going for 223 straight away. Your opinion lads? Thanks

If he does a competency course, has the necessary permissions, membership to club or range then he should apply. A friend of that is a poster here, that started off with a .308. He joined a range, and gave target shooting as his reason, but the principals remain the same.

There are no restrcitions to the size or type of firearm you can have even if it is your first. Only your reason is questioned. Show its valid, and he'll be fine.
