For the most part, the only difference between standard diesel and green diesel is the green colouring so its unlikely to be that causing the issue.

thanks any ideas what it could be. does it need a good service or is it worse than that thanks

Main problem is probably the fact it's a Nissan Vanette, ahem. That and worn injector nozzles/overfuelling pump. Next problem is getting parts, so probably best to get the injectors cleaned/recalibrated by a diesel specialist such as Tullamore Diesel Electric or suchlike. On the plus side, parts are not as scarce as for the Urvan. But thats not saying much.:)
If the Vanette motor is over-revved a lot(and it happens as they are so bleedin slow and under-geared)it tends to get smoky, but thats usually grey/blue smoke and not black. Injector re-con ftw. Though "win" is subjective.

Black smoke on a diesel is a sign of a fuel mix issue so either a direct fuelling problem as mentioned above or an airflow problem such as a split intake pipe or a dirty/blocked airfilter.

Incorrect timing can cause it too but its unlikely that it would be running well if this was the case.

Are the Fannettes not cog type timing? Might be getting mixed up on that, but fairly sure its not belt, so stretched chain/jumped cog a possibility, ditto for airfilter but was assuming the OP had ruled out the obvious(ie serviced the feckin thing). Personal best guess would be that its been running on kerosene more so than green for a while and the pump and injectors are worn. Not a fan of the Vanette myself( rougher cousin of the noxious Serena, the name alone is laughable, as few other vehicles so lack serenity as a serena) Personally, I'd rather push a Vanette than have to endure driving one, at least pushing one would be quieter, and only marginally slower.

The 2.3D vanette uses a timing belt and the vanette and serena are not so much cousins as twins, the only difference is one has windows.
