Some good news for the peoples of Ireland, if its true......
The Greater Gorgon gas fields contain about 40 trillion cubic feet of gas.
Irish workers are being sought to work on the Gorgon gas fields project on Barrow Island, Western Australia.Recruitment company JobContax is to carry out interviews for foreman and site manager positions in Dublin, London and Manchester in coming weeks.

The list of jobs available on the project can be found here. Interviews will take place in Dublin between November 18 and 25.
The salaries begin at €70,000 with a number of the position descriptions including an offer to cover the cost of relocating to Western Australian. The job advertisements state that JobContax’s client “will arrange a 457 visa for you and your family”.

The announcement has received significant media coverage in Ireland, where the official unemployment rate is 14.4 per cent.
There is a strong Irish connection on the Gorgon gas fields project. In July, Irish oil and gas company Kentz won a US$2.3 billion contract to work on the project.

It includes the structural, mechanical, piping, electrical, instrumentation and commissioning support for the construction of three Liquefied natural gas (LNG) trains, with a total capacity 15 million tonnes a year, including utilities and a domestic gas processing and compression plant.
The work is being performed by CBI Kentz JV, a joint venture between energy company CB&I and Kentz. It is scheduled to be complete in 2015.
The contract will provide more than 1,650 jobs for construction personnel in Western Australia. There is potential for this number to grow, said Kentz.Tthe Greater Gorgon gas fields, located between 130km and 200km off the northwest coast of Western Australia. The Greater Gorgon gas fields, Australia’s largest-known gas resource, contain about 40 trillion cubic feet of gas.

The interviews are for foremen and site managers not car mechanics. If you were a diesel mechanic you would have a good chance of getting a job on this project. If you are coming over on a whv it will be very difficult to get a on this one. This will be one of the most unionised projects in Australia and unions don't like whv's!
My girlfriends stepdad got a phone call from that agency the other day offering him a job. He has over 30 years experience in the gas industry but is retired and has no interest in coming all the way over here and come out of retirement. It just shows how desperate they are to find guys with the right experience.

This was posted in another thread http://www.rte.ie/news/2011/1112/australia.html

    Usual RTE drivel.

    Usual RTE drivel.

"An Australian company is looking for over 100 Irish construction foremen and site managers to work on the country's largest natural gas project.

JobContax will be carrying out interviews in Dublin, London and Manchester over the next few weeks."

Yup, usual RTE waffle. JobContax are a Dublin recruitment agency, used to be called Contax Recruitment, definitely not "An Australian company".
Pay is up to AU$140,000 not €140,000. Big difference.
Why are the jobs only for Irish people?
How many Irish people actually have the experience they are looking for?

    That's my point......

100+ jobs for Irish people yet they are going to London & Manchester to recruit them? you would think that just going to Dublin would have been a safer bet if you just wanted Irish.

Truth be they could possibly get 33 in each city but 33 doesn't sound as good as 100.

RTE have not a clue about Oz, they claim tens of thousands of Irish people are migrating to Oz when the truth is since July 2008 there has been less than 10,000 Irish people migrated to Australia.

oh and don't forget RTE reports of the thousands of 457 being offered to rebuild QLD floods.

    Sensationalist BS.

What comes to mind with this is shall we say some very economical if not cheap/free advertising it must be great for cv harvesting . Yes there are people many irish making the really big money on barrow island but guessing the particular ''client'' in this instance that are certainly not going to be even considering every tom dick and harry that throws his hat in the ring as i would imagine they would be swamped with people applying. they also neglect to mention that this is FIFO work to the middle of nowhere which does not suit everyone and has a high attrition rate

But ya total drivel as usual...

Hmm I heard about this on the news. I graduated with a degree in Construction Management this summer but have no industry experience so I'd be far from the ideal candidate for this :( Might lash a CV in anyway, ya never know might get lucky :pac:

Did any of you engineers living in Australia apply for any of these roles or hear back from Job Contax directly?

Sounds as if they are just holding interviews in Dublin and London with little mention of aussie dates for interviews? Anybody shed a bit of light?

I'm keen to apply and have residency but it is a bit unclear if they insist on sponsoring you for the duration.

    Ta

Why would you want sponsorship if you have residency?

That's the thing, I'm not looking for sponsorship as don't really wanna be tied to them for 4 years. My question is are they only considering candidates on a 457 as part of the package?

Seems likely from the job descriptions, what do you guys reckon?? I've tried emailing the Job Contax HR department but haven't heard back. They must be inundated with applications; anybody on here apply or hear word from them yet? cheers :pac:

I have spoke with them as I was trying to get an interview with the employers from the gorgan project but as i did not have heavy civil experience they are not interested in me sigh, you should just give them a ring.

Don't feel to bad, about 95% of people going to that expo will probably fall into that category. If its as easy as just turning up then those positions would have been filled ages ago.

First off I would like to make it clear that I am speaking on behalf of JobContax.

I would like to answer a few questions raised in this thread.

JobContax is an Irish recruitment agency.
We cannot help it if media outlets get their facts wrong.

We have been placing experienced construction and engineering professionals into jobs in Australia since 2005.
In the Australian market we currently deal with highly qualified, specialised construction roles only.
We will be offering more fitter, mechanic, carpenter, electrician and trades jobs in 2012.
Due to the natural resource led economic boom, floods in Queensland and earthquake in Christchurch; there is severe shortage of skilled experienced construction workers in Australia/NZ.

We have placed hundreds of people from Ireland/Uk/Australia/Europe/Africa on the large project civils in Western Austalia.
Our Australian partner has visited Dublin and the UK 3 times in 2011 for final face tot face interviews.
They will be visting 3/4 times next year for more interviews.
Recruitment for the large projects in Australia, Gorgon, Wheatstone, Gladstone, Browse will continue on an ongoing basis for 2012/13
The full financial packages are correct and quoted in Euros €140,000
All jobs come with family 457 visasa included

The interview slots for this visit, Nov 2011, have been filled. Once the story was picked up by the media we did see a spike in the number of applicants.

The Australians have found that due to cultural similarities the Irish and UK workers assimilate into their corporate structure quicker and have similar industry procedures/standards.

There will be ongoing phone and skype interviews with candidates who have the relevant expreience, but were unable to be get a slot for this round of interviews. Anyone who has applied but not made the shortlist for the Nov interviews, will be contacted regarding the ongoing interviews.
Registered candidates can check their account details to view their status on our system.

We Have new partnerships in place for commercial construction jobs on the East coast of Australia in place for 2012.

    - There is no upper age limit on 457 visas. Irish cnadidates currently travelling or working in Australia have gained jobs through us in the past.
Interviews for these candidates can be arranged at short notice in Australia.
The 457 visa is job specific. However it is also a pathway visa to residency. Once you have a 457 visa and are working in OZ, you can independently apply
for residency. Once the residency comes through you are free to leave the 457 visa and work wherever you want in Australia.

Mod Thanks karen ... please get in contact with community manager Dav, If you want somekind of advertisement, or any media interaction etc

Also a good idea to apply directly to some of the contractors such as Mcmahon construction, john holland etc
