Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I know some very successful people who only read biographies. Does that count as non fiction ? The problem is any genre can have stuff inside it which is pure hyperbole or plain made up. You only cant read fiction but you do read , right ?

Yea, i read a good bit, just not novels. I read biographies from time to time, i read a lot of newspaper/magazine articles on all manner of things that interest me and stuff like that. I occasionaly read poetry - if i'm feeling particularly melodramatic:). But i'd say 99% of what i read is just functional, i wan't to know something so i look it up. For leisure so to speak, i'd much rather watch the movie than read the book, and i'd actually much prefer to listen to music than do either.

Reading before you were two? I'm calling bs on that.
Well I could also read before I was two. Simple stuff at first, but by three was reading at a ten year old's level.
On the whole topic of reading - my unpopular opinion is that reading fiction is fúcking torture. I can't stand it, so much so that i've only read 1 or 2 novels, i think since i left school (roughly 20 years ago!).
There seems to be a general consensus that if you aren't into reading you must be a bit thick (maybe i am:D) but there are literally hundreds of things i would prefer to do than read fiction.
Meet your twin SB. I've read under 5 fiction books in my life. I read shítloads of non fiction, but my head just can't get around fiction at all. Never could even as a small child. I'd always ask for information(mostly natural world stuff with some engineering stuff thrown in) type books when my mates were reading Famous five or whatever the fcuk. It would be near torture for me to read something like Harry potter. I just can't plug into the internal world of novels thing that others can, yet I can watch drama on stage and screen and enjoy it and devoured comics as a kid. No idea why.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

epigentic modifications from climatic conditions sounds like pseudo science you half googled. Pinker's book deals with everything. He is a neuro-scientist not a psychologist. The book is an overview on the modern versions of science of heritability in humans.

This 'interested in" is a deflection. We started off with science. So lets be clear. Most people cant do mathematical science, in particular, because they are not intelligent enough to handle the maths. If we move onto other forms of intelligence, like Beckham's ability to kick a ball, we will be here all day. Were we to talk common sense, it would be another issue

. You said everybody can do science. Thats not true.

Right Duggy im back! As regards science I have no problem with most people being able to undertandstand advanced scientific principles. I think some scientists have the view that science is for scientists only. A view reminiscent of the times when priests daid the bible was only for priest to read and not lay people. Understanding the most advanced scientific principles wouldnt require a genius level of intellect imo.

As regards mathematical science I dont know why your singling that out. I have met mathematicians who despite putting in effort havent any aptitude towards chemistry or biochemistry. Its not alone in being an advanced science.

I cant get into novels for the life of me. Not that I have tried to be honest. As far back as I can remember I always read nature, science or history books. I also loved comics as a kid but some are a lot more intelligent than given credit for. I certainly read comics more advanced than harry potter!

As well McIlroy isn't even an Ulster Scot.

McIlroy considers himself to be a UK citizen. He's already declared for GB when golf makes its debut in the 2016 Olympics. Also listening to him during the week talk about Andy Murray its clear where his allegiance lies with him making constant reference to "we" and "our country".

There's nothing wrong with that, it wouldn't change my views on him. It doesn't mean he's not also an Irishman, but just an Irishman who embraces Northern Ireland's political identity.

The one thing that irks me about him slightly is that he did take full advantage of all the GUI grants available to him and he never gives any recognition to this. The GUI gave him great opportunities, his parents didn't have the money to fund his amateur career.

    Unpopular opinion:

I don't think a celebrity's death ever deserves to be front page news because its never a significant enough event. Yes this applies on everyone from Princess Diana and Michael Jackson.

Additionally I think any fan who'd argue with me on this point only ever cared about them because they envied their fame, skill and status; respect for them as human being was only ever lip service.

I happen to think Bono is a sound lad.

Mod note: last time a thread like this was made a lot of people were banned.
If your opinion is too extreme you probably shouldn't post it.

Oh indeed and I dont deny theres a huge demand for them. I just think If they need that amount of money to put in an effort then their not very good sportsmen. Some of the best athletes in the world dont get half of what footballers get and they train far harder than a lot of footballers.

It's about supply and demand if there is massive money made on the sport obviously the players should be well paid. Why is it just football you pick on American sports people are paid alot more in the NBA etc,. It's only people at the very top level of the sport who get massive money, you can bet that west ham or norwich's players are not even on 70k a week.

I think its more than fair if a club is turning hundred's of millions a player gets a good cut considering all the money is cause of them.

I agree with this - up to a point.

Clubs know fans aren't going to 'shop' elsewhere. Enough of them will pay through the nose, especially at the top clubs.

Because, frankly, if they don't, a glory-hunting Euro/Japanese tourist will part with £60 a ticket for the over-hyped EPL "experience".

The winners in this whole charade are, of course, players living high on the hog. Many of whom are no more than mediocre, sadly.

It's the song writing - best in the world by a long shot and unlike most huge acts touring these days, his new stuff is as good as his old. Take the stones for example - huge stadium draw untill recently but hadn't had a good song in 20 years, U2 - when was their last half decent song? at least 10 years ago anyway.

I would agree to a certain extent with this regarding the median wage top level pros earn but its the high outliner wages in football which are not commercially correct, let alone morally. Just look at the amount of money Man City has spent in the last few years on about 40 or so players. Its actually disgusting. The question has to be asked is this economically viable and where is this money being pillaged from?

Clubs like Man City, Chelsea, Anzhi, Malaga are being both up by oligarchies who do it for nothing more than the thrill of it. Their money comes generally from natural resources which they pillage from another country, generally their own, and the countries are left with massive inequalities while around 20 players who play for the club live on massively inflated wages that would around 100 people could live on. We are blind to this because most of us are not peasants who live in Saudi Arabia.

Actually Im astounded that you think someone who is searching for a cure to cancer, solving the worlds hunger problems or curing aids is getting what their worth ie in some cases 60,000-100,000 and someone like lionel messi who gets 24 million plus is ok.

Pharmacutical compainies dont pay out anywhere near the percentage of profits to scientists that football clubs do for footballers.

Even in terms of the sport itself footballers wages are sickening Olympic athletes train far far harder than most footballers.
