Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Medical card and living in Northern Ireland

    Hi,

I am writing on behalf of a friend who has the following concern.
She owns a medical card and is living in Northern Ireland now. She forgot to cancel the card before she left the Rep of Ireland. This was around 5 months ago.

Her concern is, could she be accussed of fraud for owning an Irish medical
card and living in Northern Ireland.

In other words does this count towards fraud.

Is it a case like signing on where you must be resident in the state. Is owning a medical card and living in Northern Ireland a fraudulent activity.
My friend is not signing on or obtaining benefits from the south.

It wouldn't be fraud just to hold the card.

However, you have to be "ordinarily resident" in the State to be eligible for a medical card. If she is now ordinarily resident in the 6 Counties, then the card is not legally valid. If she were to try and use it, that would be fraud. Likewise if she were discovered in circumstances which suggested that this was her intention it could cause her difficulties. If she is worried, then she should send it back to them.

Also, if she is resident in NI, she will have access to the NHS, so shouldn't need services from the Republic.
