Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Australia has agreed to host a full US Marine task force in the coming years, Prime Minister Julia Gillard has announced at a news conference with US President Barack Obama in Canberra.
She said about 250 US Marines would arrive next year, eventually being built up to 2,500 personnel.
The deployment is being seen as a move to counter China's growing influence.
We should follow the US lead. This could be a great opportunity for Ireland. With immediate effect we increase our defence forces to 400,000 (our unemployed)and post them all over the world,to counter the chinese.:D
I reckon the Americans would pay us to do this,as they give billions in support to their allies.

Join the army and see the world.

Seems though we owe so much money out at the moment I can see any such Irish barracks being named Company HS, HS being short for you guessed it Human Shield.

    Against the Chinese says you?!!!

Are you mad! They are going to take over the world. I say we get our defence forces (unemployed) to join the Chinese. Lets ally ourselves with our future rulers! Better that than the alternative!

    Why do they deserve that?
I mean I thought Afghanistan and Iraq was bad enough.

Did they steal bread? Or was it just the whole shooting civilians thing?

The United States spends only 4.7% of its GDP on defence.

That's hardly going to make it broke.

We deployed to Australia to acclimatize before moving into the jungles of East Timor.. So, its been done.

If china moved troops into south america to counter the US influence I dare say it would almost be seen as an act of war

They've always had good relations with the Americans, and have got the graves of Australian Vietnam war-dead to prove it.

The Chinese army is the largest permanent army in the world, with over 2,200,000 members, nearly a 1,000,000 in reserve and over 350,000,000 males of military age.

These 250 marines better be fast reloaders!

Well I never implied that. anyways 4.1% of the GDP is what is spent as discretionary spending. the actual spending is far higher..

Just to counter the treat from the Chinese. The Chinese has rapidly been moderniziing her arm forces( especially her navy, couple of newly built aircraft carrier to be in service in the next couple of years). There's also territorial claims in the South China Sea, mainly the Spratly Island. So basically the Yanks just covering their arses just in case China decide to have ideas in this region. Simple;)

    Because that's what they do.

Full spectrum dominance and all that malarkey.
    US military doctrine

Officially known as full-spectrum superiority and defined by the U.S. military as:
The cumulative effect of dominance in the air, land, maritime, and space domains and information environment that permits the conduct of joint operations without effective opposition or prohibitive interference.[1]

The United States military's doctrine has espoused a strategic intent to be capable of achieving this state in a conflict, either alone or with allies[2] by defeating any adversary and controlling any situation across the range of military operations.

The stated intent implies significant investment in a range of capabilities; dominant maneuver, precision engagement, focused logistics, and full-dimensional protection.

Australia is seeking closer ties for the same reason Ireland would seek closer ties with the most powerful military force in the world if, say France was a rising military power whoms intentions we new little or nothing about and certainly feared.

There is a similiar movement in Japan, South Korea and even Thailand as China becomes more assertive.

The US does it because Australia is probably the US' greatest ally, barring maybe Canada and the UK, it is also a signal to other ASEAN nations that it still has interests in the region.

The US will do everything in its power to ensure the wars they seek do not land on their own shores. like they did during the cold war, placed nukes in Britain.. easier targets for the old soviets, and even today with their missile platforms in Europe.

They love a good war but the reality of it is secret and you'll only find out if you join the army.

In short, they're a bunch of pussys.

    +1

They're making up for the fact that they were late for the last two world wars, by being really punctual this time :D

Just like to say that I have met many Marines throughout my life, and regardless of what their government puts them through, the organization is truly one to behold. They sacrifice a huge amount, and instil honour, and discipline into 90% of their troops (there will always be bad eggs).

It is one of the last bastions of tradition, masculinity, and discipline in the modern world.

Wrong, there are no USMC personnel in those photos nor should there be. The unit involved in the Abu Ghraib prisoner scandal was a Military Police unit.
