US Working Visa other than J1

Hey, so I currently have a friend working in Canada on a year visa. He is not eligible to get a J1 in 2012 as he graduated this year 2011 but he wants to work in America for summer 2012 before returning home to pursue further studies. Is there any visa available that would allow him to do this? Any advice appreciated :)

He can get the year long J1 within one year of graduating, so depending on when in 2011 he graduated, he might still make it.

There is no "holiday work visa" which would suit otherwise.
