RIP Larry Benson (My Grandfather)

    The death has occurred of Lawrence (Larry) BENSON of Sally Gardens, Shancurragh, Hillquarter, Coosan, Athlone, Westmeath

    Sadly missed by his loving sons, daughters, sisters, in-laws, nephews, nieces, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, relatives and many friends.

    Rest in Peace

    Reposing at Flynn's Funeral Home, The Strand, on Friday evening from 5pm with removal at 7pm to The Church of Our Lady Queen of Peace, Coosan, arriving at 7.30pm. Requiem mass on Saturday at 12 noon, with burial afterwards in Cornamagh Cemetery.

    For Years Larry was a well known fiddle player in athlone and remembered for his sessions in seans bar on Thursday nights and Sunday mornings.

    He Passed away peacefully yesterday after a 6 month illnes.

    Very sorry to hear that and condolences to you and your family. A great local character lost to the town as well as an important part of the area's musical heritage.

    Larry also served behind the bar in Sean's for many years, usually midweek in the daytime. He used to puff on his pipe while filling decent pints of porter when he wasn't playing the fiddle up by the piano on Sunday mornings and Thursday evenings.

    RIP. Didnt know the man very well, but anyone I ever heard mention his name spoke fondly of him.
