Just a point worth mentioning to anyone who's new to Kindles: I don't recommend purchasing books from the back catalogues of major publishers, as the ebook editions are in my experience riddled with misprints. I use my Kindle mainly for reading recently published works, and for free ebooks from gutenberg.org. If I wanted to buy something from, say, the Penguin Modern Classics line, I'd still opt for the physical edition; any older titles I've bought in Kindle format I've ended up returning, as they've all contained a lot of misprints. I guess the publishers must have used some form of character recognition technology and just scanned the old print editions when creating the ebook versions, and then neglected to properly proofread the results.

How did you spot the misprints?

When I'm on holiday, I'd usually read at least three or four +500 page novels during my time, especially if there's a long flight involved. I absolutely adore books, I own hundreds of them. There are books everywhere in my house, but I think the Kindle I got for Christmas will come in very handy, transport-wise. Plus, I found a Kindle edition of a book that I wanted to read which is currently out of print, so I'm extra impressed now! :)
It will also be handier for reading in bed than bulky hardbacks or airport editions. I'm looking forward to packing the next time I go away and not having to cram my bag full of heavy books.

the ebooks for it should be much cheaper I'm talking 7 or 8 quid for new titles

Finally set my mum up on her Kindle yesterday. She seemed impressed with it and especially liked the dictionary feature.

One other advantage I haven't seen mentioned here is reading across multiple devices. I was able to read some of my book on my phone (because my Kindle was at home) and then sync the furthest page read to my Kindle device when I got home.

You'd guess correctly. I've seen other authors giving out about this - Amazon have, and still do, use OCR software to scan in older texts and don't always bother to proof read them. I'm assuming newer ones are proof read but back catalogs, which they're trying to fill, can end up like this.

Have a look at previous posts where we've discussed some of this and the economics of it all. Not quite as clear cut as it initially seems (certainly for newer titles).

I never thought I'd use a Kindle, I was pretty adamant about it in fact. However, I just bought a Kindle Fire eReader/tablet. And I could not love it more.

I love reading in bed and the backlit screen makes that an absolute pleasure. I've spent happy hours trawling through whats available and I can't believe I was ever reticent about using one. I can't believe what good value my little device is either, although as far as I know they aren't available in Europe yet and I suspect it'll be a lot more expensive than the $200 I paid when it does.

I love my books and I've never willingly parted with one. I think there's still room in my heart for the physical book, and as long as there's room in my house I'll keep buying them. But for reading on the go - of which I do a lot - the Fire far exceeds my expectations, and the other features are a huge bonus.

If I read a book on the Kindle and really enjoy it, I would probably end up buying it in print anyway.

That's a good thing about having all these books on the Kindle, I have a massive bookcase that goes right from floor to ceiling, and it's still barely enough to fit all my books!

If you download a Kindle book, is it just on the Kindle or can you back it up somewhere else? I don't like the idea that if something happened to it, I could potentially lose hundreds of booka in one go!

If you're buying from Amazon then a back of all purchases are kept, so you can send them to different devices etc.

Quick question for people that are experienced at using the kindle.
I have a kindle 3. I have loads of books on it so I often do a search to find the one I want.
How can I search for book title only and not search for every book that uses that word(takes ages)

Has anyone noticed what price differentiation, if any, exists between the .co.uk and the .com sites for the same titles or is it pretty much down to currency ?

I made the jump. I ordered 10 books from Amazon and most of them would not be delivered until March, so I said screw that I'm not waiting. I canceled the order and ordered a Kindle instead. It gets here tomorrow. Woohoo!

Putting it into sleep mode is perfectly fine and is how you're meant to turn it off. But if you wish to power it down completely just hold the power button until the screen goes blank.

Kindles can be good for reading at night in bed. It can be annoying when your in a comfortable position and reading a thick book when your arms start to get tired but you cant just move because you might lose the amount of light being cast on the page by your lamp.

The dictionary function is the most useful feature. You can easily look up a word while reading without losing your place.

I own a kindle but I still buy some points for my collection. It has just become more specialised. Only really sci-fi and fantasy novels being bought.

Kindle also handy for reading some books which you may not want to be seen reading in public.
like you i love SF/fantasy books, i took a look at a kindle at W H smiths UK,at the price of £69.it is loaded with 13 classic books, but they say there is over a million free books on line,is this true ?or do i still have to pay to down load them

I always admire/envy people who are able to read 2-3 books a week. I'm lucky if I get through 1-2 per month. One of my resolutions is going to be to read at least 1 book per week next year.

Would you say you're a pretty fast reader, or is it just that i'm slower than most?

There are loads of free books online but most of them are ones where the copyright has expired so they`re nearly all older classics.

Few good ones here if youre willing to trawl through it by author.

You can also search "listmania" on amazon for free books

    Example here:

Free sci fi books on Amazon.

I have an older Kindle and when I am having a bath I pop it in 2 (double) zip lock bags. I take all the air out of the first one before putting it into the second one. It has has survived more than 2 years of long baths no problem. Cost approx 50c :)

This has been a hilarious experience from the start.

The Kindle I ordered two days ago was sent to Canada by mistake (I ordered one day shipping). I called customer service today and they said the earliest they can get that particular kindle to me is Wednesday. I advised I'm on vacation next week and won't be here to accept delivery. They said they would cancel the order and refund me. They also asked me to order a new kindle that can get here on time. No problem I can do that.

Later on I check my email and my bank account. They refunded me the shipping cost only for Kindle #1, and charged me twice for Kindle #2, equating to being charged for 3 Kindles. I called them up and they refunded me in full for Kindle #1 but said they could not see any charges yet for Kindle #2 and asked that I contact my bank.

I called my bank and they canceled one of those charges for me. What a disaster. Turns out Kindle #2 can't get here on time either and will be delivered while I'm on vacation. :pac:

You would have been quicker just getting one in tesco!! :pac:

The only downside to mine so far is finding a cover.
    1. They're REALLY expensive, about €60 if I want one with a built in light!
    2. I can't find anywhere in Dublin that sells the covers- I can order one online but I'd like to be able to the cover I choose before splashing out sixty quid on it! I tried tesco, but they had feck all in the way of covers.

Currys have the cover with the light built in for 60 but they also have cases from €29.99--Im at odds aswell whether to spend 60 on a case though.

    Might try ebay later on.

Does anyone know if you can hide or turn off the thing that tells you what percentage you are through a book? I find it really annoying!
