Does anyone know if you can hide or turn off the thing that tells you what percentage you are through a book? I find it really annoying!
I find that annoying too- I miss my page numbers, I don't need the feckin' percent! :p

Tesco and, as Hellrazer said, Currys.. but it seems the best selection is on amazon.co.uk unless you just want the black cover.

What can they do though? I know the page numbers are on there, but the concept only makes sense when it refers to a print edition; in the future, when we will probably have many titles released only in digital formats, noting the percentage progress will be the normal way to see where you are in the book.

Very tempted to splash out on a kindle, every time I go into Tesco I look longingly at them,

    however, I'm in two minds......

I have so many actual books in my to read pile at home that I'm afraid if I started to use the Kindle, I would love it so much and then not read any of the actual books I have which would be a huge waste of all the money I have spent on them

Also, I know everyone says they are so easy to use, but I'm afraid some technology disaster will strike and I will end up losing all the books I will have purchased. I know there is a backup on Amazon but could it be like you ipod that something happens, and you can't sync your ipod to your itunes and end up having to start all over again:confused: ........not a major fan of technology sometimes!!!

On the good side, it would be so handy when commuting, not having to lug a big book with you - likewise, when travelling you don't have to bring loads of books

And you have access to books at any time (I want the 3G version!)

I get what you're saying but I'd rather have nothing to tell me how far through a book I was than a percentage gauge. Many people will appreciate having this though but I wish there was an option to turn it off.

If you press MENU, it displays the page number- so there should be a 'one or the other' option imho. :)

That's because you're buying from the US site, I suppose the only way to change it would be to provide a UK address, but then it would be in sterling.

    To summarize, no.

Stupid dollars. I'll need to have a currency converter on my phone for 'Kindle' purposes. :p

Do Amazon ship Kindles to Ireland? Is it not affected by the electronics ban?

I was reading in bargain alerts all the problems people are having trying to get ebooks delivered to Ireland. I don't have a Kindle so I don't entirely understand the problem, is it a problem?

We bought my mum a US bought kindle for Christmas. On St Stephens Day morning, she bought 3 books from the comfort of her bed while a gale was blowing out side.

I don't think its a general problem. Though remember some items may not be available in Ireland due to licensing or release dates. I'll go have a look.

EDIT: The issue there is some people have US-based kindles, as in registered with www.amazon.com. There is a special offer on the UK-based website at the moment where you can get some books for 99p and they were having difficulty availing of the offer, with some of them spoofing a UK based address and so on.

So the issue is not that it is hard to get books 'delivered' to Irish ebook readers, its that if you are registered to one site, it is hard to avail of offers on another site. A bit like going into Tesco in Ireland and trying to buy something in Stirling for a british price ;)

    EDIT 2:

Not sure shipping wise, but you can buy them in both Tesco and Currys now. Possibly other retailers too.

I'm like syklops shadow/echo at the moment. There's no problem getting ebooks delivered to Ireland, you can have them in an instant. The issue arises in that Irish purchased Kindles are defaulted to use the US store rather than the UK one, even if you already have a UK account from buying physical items from Amazon. People want to use the UK store for a variety of reasons, my one being to grab some cheap books from the 12 Days of Christmas sale which is not mirrored on the US site.

I think all those problems were associated with people trying to get ebooks from the UK. There is, afaik, some issue with copyright which prevents us from purchasing ebooks from the UK (I was reading an article the other day, but can't find the link now). There is no issue with buying ebooks from the US, not that I've encountered or heard of anyway.

You can't buy all books from the US store either - some are for US customers only. If you browse Amazon.com without being logged in you'll see some extra titles. You'll also see the occasional offer we can't avail of. For example Joe Abercrombie's "The Heroes" was $1 for US customers on one deal but $14 for European customers...

I got a cover today from amazon. Bloody ridiculous price, but it's really great.
My kindle feels really 'book' like with it now. :)

I got a Kindle for Christmas. Woo Hoo!! Don't physically have it yet but it's on the way. Can't wait for it to arrive. I'm sure I'll be on asking questions of seasoned Kindle owners but until then I'll just content myself with being as excited as a child on Christmas Eve.

Actually, the cost for an ebook is pretty similar to the cost of a physical book. The physical part of a book (e.g. paper, transport) amounts to about 10% of the total cost.

I was contemplating a Kindle and thought i would see how the folks on here were getting on with them. The technology sounds a bit complicated in terms of downloading etc.. since I never actually downloaded anything much of the internet.. no music, no games, you get the picture. Still ye seem to have good advice on those things, thanks.

Good for ye that have them and love them. Anyone get one and hate it? That's what I am afraid of, spend the money and then not like it. One major thing in its favour is the weight of it. I am reading a 1000 pg hard back at the moment and my poor wrists are wreaked holding the darn thing  Maybe that's what's putting a Kindle in my mind in the first place. :)

Edit: sorry I meant to ask another question. Can one person pass on a downloaded book to another person? Apologies if this is a silly question but i did mention the lack of technology know how.

Downloading is easy, once you have a amazon account it can be done with one click from either the kindle itself or a computer and you have the book instantly.

Kindle books can also be loaned, not sure if every book qualifies but see here
