The history show on RTE focused on the history of the Berlin wall tonight.

Does anybody on the forum have any firsthand knowledge of the Berlin wall or of the division of Germany in the cold war period? There is an interesting thread on the cold war forum here where a boards user recounted their personal experiences in East Germany around the time of the end of that state. Other such memories, etc about the era and its nuances are all welcome. What was reaction to the wall like in Ireland given that we had been neutral in WWII, we would at this stage have had strong American links.

I knew a German family who moved to Ireland on the building of the Berlin Wall - they thought the Russians would invade West Germany.
