    Nah, breaks down like this

Heavy permanent live wire from the battery to the amp
Light accessory live from the headunit as a trigger
    Audio cables from the headunit
Earth from the amp to the body

Hardest bit is running the permanent live through the bulkhead

Easy enough to run them along under the carpet by the doors

Thanks for that, but honestly im just more confused. Il have to search google for "install a sub for dummies." it strange becouse I could read that 100+ times and I still wouldent have a clue. But thanks for trying.

Simple solution: Get an auto electrician to do the job?

You've reminded me of when I was a kid, and entered a competition to win a van, and I did.

My dad traded it in for a Lancia, start of my love affair with Italian cars :)

Please don't make me **** myself with an alarming post like that

I'd be shocked if it was the rack as I've never heard, read or even seen suggested that a rack has failed on a 75. Lots of other thigs yet but never the rack

Well first off, ,where is blinking Rover when you need him? Always about for a debate he is!

Secondly that seems to be unique to alfa, I was looking into an MG coupe a few months ago and nothing nasty like the alfa issue (unique apparently to the 156) was mentioned so you should be fine.

So taking my lower estimate, it's a couple of hours labour and small money for parts

Has anyone on here every considered how many of us would sign up for a nightclass on basic diy and how cars work?

    Would.

In fact would any of our resident mechanics be interested in running a small workshop some Saturday on basic maintenance......

Eh hello, I'd be there for a month of Saturdays, starting with how cars work (you so don't want to know how I figure out camshafts and how they work) followed by q and a) then another Sat of how the top end works, then basic maintanance, and how to diagnose issues, and what software you can use.

I work as a trainer so I'd develop notes at no charge to the mechanic and supply links to specialist sites.

All I/we need is a mechanic, perhaps start with a poll here on how many people need a basic understanding of how cars works, what basic issues they can deal with, and what different noises (like a creaky turn you talked aboutu johnos) mean?

Not sure how my boss would be with that:eek:

And there in lies the problem.

Everywhere is (rightly) worried about somebody accidentally on purpose falling and hurting themselves.

I'd also like to be shown how to properly clean and shine my car

Having worked as an adult trainer and now a teacher I'd be happy to help out if I was learning something :)

What about a Sunday if we paid to attend and you sort out the tax implications?

I've been very lucky the past two years, my mechanic now shows me what parts have failed, I go and learn about them on the interweb and we have great chats, it's like equals I know for the most part what he is talking about and understand the implications, and it makes a HUGE difference for me when deciding whether or not to fix a car.

Ah I was thinking ND would be at work

Possibly the place to do it is the place in (I think) Tallaght where you can hire space for mech work?

It would be the insurance issues etc etc with doing something like this in a normal garage like mine.

How about a specific thread of some sort?

I like the idea of that now, Ive alway wanted to know more about how my car works, and to be able to be more hands on with it myself.

I'll start a poll tomorrow ND, off to sleep shortly, so won't put it properly?

Need to think about covering issues like you brought up, so 24 hours won't be any harm in thinking about it

Thanks for your input, been really good.

I would love someone such as ND to show me how to carry out some moderately difficult tasks on cars. Wouldnt be interested in learning how to change the oil but for something like changing brake discs i definiitely would.

Would also be cool if someone like vectra or MasterButcher would show a group how to clay/compund etc.
I still think i could improve on my car waxing skills also

Ok here is a small suggestion:

    1. Is it possible that boards could arrange for a mechanic to walk members around how to do basic checks and servicing on a car.

    2. Could someone with experience show members how to care for the paintwork on their car.........shining, waxing, using a clay bar and restoring paint and interior cleaning and care.

If i did what you did and it started first time like that id have a crisis with happiness  to me the internals of an engine are something i darent even think about investigating but the way you can take it apart into tiny bits and then repair them is fascinating.

Just watching new wheeler dealers...13k on a morgan....what happened 1-2k buying!?

I reckon that with labour included they didn't break even.........

BTW pulling a car apart is easy but I can never figure out where the spare nuts and bolts go when I've put it all together again

If I remember correctly, detailer.ie does courses on how to do all these things. Not too expensive either.

Would it be a good idea to invite them along to a meet for a demonstration and sales opportunity to members?

There will be a detailing day here in the near future I would hope.

In regards to getting a mechanic, nothing from stopping you sorting that :p

I'm currently checking out the plausibility of having a Boards meet/open day at my place so demonstrations etc could be added to the days activities..

I've had enough contact with mechanics of late :D

If there is a demand for it and someone wants to promote their business I'm happy to organise it in conjunction with a meet or as a stand alone weekend event.

If anyone wants to PM me about offering the service I'll help organise it...............the service can even be done on my new car............and that noise can be fixed *ahem*
