IDA have finally brought some jobs into Limerick, 69. Hopefully that's not our lot over the course of this Government's lifetime, as it is these type of jobs that are needed to stimulate the local economy.

More than a hundred new jobs are being announced in the technology sector today in counties Dublin and Limerick.

Software developer, Misys, is investing €5m to establish a new Research and Development facility in the capital, where 35 positions will come on stream.

The firm already employs more than a hundred people at its two software development centres.

Most of the new positions will go to software engineering professionals, while the others will be software consultancy roles.

Elsewhere, 69 new jobs are being announced at ON-Semiconductor in Limerick, details of which will be revealed later today.

Certainly won't solve the problem, but each 1 of these jobs leads to about 3 others in the local economy. It's for this reason that Limerick's economy is way behind the rest of the cities, they got thousands of these IDA jobs, we lost thousands.

Jimmy Long was just on the radio talking about those jobs, the Opera centre site, and a company that he says would bring 900 jobs in one go.

Was listening to the radio again a while ago and one advert caught my ear.

It was for Colbert station and the routes provided by it. Basically the idea was highlighting how Colbert station has regular routes to Dublin and Cork which would be ideal, according to the advert, for going to for Xmas shopping.

Just seemed a bit ironic that the mayor who has been damning the likes of the Parkway valley project as being a major threat to Limerick was interviewed
on a station that is carrying adverts telling people to go from Limerick to Cork/Dublin for their shopping.

So the message I got is that it is bad to open new businesses just outside the city, but grand to spend your shopping money in other cities. :D Somehow I doubt that Cork and Dublin radio stations will be carrying adverts saying to get the train to Limerick to do your Xmas shopping.

I know the radio station only plays what it is paid to play in terms of adverts, but damn is that a poor advert for Limerick city shopping.

We can't give the government or IDA too much credit, as this company are expanding, what I'd like to see are new companies brought into the region.

900 jobs in 1 go would certainly be a huge boost to the region.

It certainly would be a huge boost, but it would seem that this news that he spoke of is the exact same rumour that was discussed in this thread some weeks back about the call centre going to the Raheen industrial estate, so I am a bit sceptical when something that was floating about as a rumour weeks ago is yet again being used as a potential huge boost for the area.

The same man was on the radio a number of times in the last month or so talking about the Opera centre project in terms of it being of interest to serious developers who wanted to make a top class retail centre there, and also on the radio saying how he was happy that Mr Binman had things under control with regards to their debts. Turned out there was no developer buying the Opera Centre to make the retail centre, and Mr Binman lost the next day in the courts against the banks it owed millions to. So I take whatever he says on the radio with a lot of salt.

Thought Dundalk was lined up for the next massive call centre?

Still won't stop the local politicians from trying to make up they have some influence on things though.

In todays irish times, it says Pay Pal is the call centre, 1,000 jobs for either limerick or dundalk.
So there is a 50/50 chance of them coming to limerick to old dell factory.

Could be great news for limerick.

Would be amazing news because if a centre opened that took on 900 people pretty much from the start, then there is the chance of a high number of knock on jobs being created on the back of that.

Plus it would give a lot of good people the chance to get back working again, which would be as valuable for their own mental health/dignity etc as it would be for their bank accounts.

PayPal to create 1,000 jobs in Dundalk or Limerick

GLOBAL ONLINE payments giant PayPal is the firm behind the plan to create around 1,000 jobs in either Dundalk or Limerick.

The company is assessing available office buildings in both centres before deciding where to locate the new enterprise.

PayPal has ruled out the former Quinn Direct office block in Navan because of the absence of a large skilled workforce in the town and its proximity to Blanchardstown where the company and its parent eBay already employ around 1,600 people.

PayPal is the global leader in online payment solutions. It was founded in 1998 and has 123 million customers in 103 markets worldwide.

Its Blanchardstown office, which serves as the European headquarters, will not be affected by the opening of a further office in either Dundalk or Limerick. The company has several options for buildings in both centres. The final decision is expected to be determined by the availability of a skilled workforce to roll out the new operation.

The buildings being considered in Limerick include the former Dell plant at Raheen which once housed 1,900 workers.

Politicians from all parties are continuing to canvass for the PayPal call centre to be located in their constituencies. Though Limerick has been designated a priority region for investment, the IDA has only managed to secure 300 new jobs for the area over the past year.

Paypal offices would be great to get in Limerick. It would be good for language students coming out of college. However, i would be surprised to see it happen.

Google, Facebook, Ebay, etc. are all in Dublin, and being multilingual international companies will more than likely have people over and back all the time from different countries. Unless Shannon open up a few routes, this would be a drawback in my uneducated opinion......

It would be great to see though, it would mean not having to go to Dublin to work in one of these companies....

I would think Limerick would be a good choice as there are companies situated here that already work with eBay
