I'm eating one right now and its quite the tasty with a cup of tea.

A lot of people hate them but there's a few, like myself, that can handle their fruity goodness.

I avoided them until I realised they weren't actually minced meat.

Love them now with a cup of Barry's Tea.

    Nasty.
Used to think there was minced beef in em too-with a sugary top. Taste like it could be anything in those vile things so wasnt too far fetched.
Give me a candy cane for an xmas treat any day!

    Also, they are gack.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,151 ✭✭✭✭ejmaztec

Tesco Value ones are the worst ones, with a hell of a lot more "pie" than mince.:(

    From wikipedia:
The early mince pie was known by several names, including mutton pie, shrid pie and Christmas pie. Typically its ingredients were a mixture of minced meat, suet, a range of fruits, and spices such as cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg. Served around Christmas, the savoury Christmas pie (as it became known) was associated with supposed Catholic "idolatry" and during the English Civil War was banned by the Puritan authorities.

Depends on the pastry - a nice pastry and they're yum.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,280 ✭✭✭✭Eric Cartman

very much depends, the type of mince pies with thick pastry, enough sugar in them to kill a diabetic , heated and topped with cream are delicious , the bitter ones your granny makes are shíte though

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 37,214 ✭✭✭✭Dudess

A place in Cork called The Gingerbread House used to bake ones with a buttery shortbread pastry - they were to die for. Closed now sadly. The Mr Kipling, Cuisine De France etc stodgy ones - mank.
