Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Is that an Irish reg?

Also, has anyone driven one? I'd imagine they'd have similar available "power" to the Midget?

    IM is a Galway Reg.

that registration is a galway registration, that car looks like a 1970 model which i thhink should have a 1600 engine,i've read articles that say they look sportier than they actually are, the 1600cc models being the sportiest, and should have disc brakes on the front.i havent driven a midget so cant compare.

I think if I was spending 20 grand on a classic coupé I'd want something with a bit of poke in it.

That kind of money opens up all sorts of doors.

That car looks like an american import, (red rear lenses and towel rail bumpers), if so it was probably an import, ( LHD ). Genuine RHD models are not common, especially the cabriolet model.

Indeed it is, but seeing as 1639IM is a late 1976 Galway issue, the first reg of 1977 was 2061IM, it was most probably an import at that time if what 411guy says is right about it being a '70 model.
    Also, has anyone driven one?

Ever driven a Beetle? Well, they are quite similar. And just as noisy!:D

It probably came in from South Africa. Cars in the highveld didn't tend to suffer much rust so a lot of very good right hand drive classics came from there.

I imported one; a hardtop coupe, from SA in 2001 and sold it on five years ago it was a 1600 and I enjoyed it immensely.

On the plus side it is easy to maintain, holds 70 mph no problem (mine did anyway) and getting parts isn't a problem.

On the negative side. It's a sheep in wolfs clothing, it isn't a performance car but then again the styling is lovely. It is spartan, but aren't they all.

Three children and no time necessitated it passing on to a new home

Correction:-The previous posters are right on the origin. It'd have a ZV or a year reg if it was an import.

I have driven Beetles  Lol, maybe not so. If it was somewhere around the ten mark it would be a nice car to have but as someone said 20k opens alot of doors.

Correct, that's in import: that is a 1976 Galway number plate.....my Dad reg'd a new VW Van (in Phoenix Red !), very close to that reg number at the time..........I lived in a house about 5 doors down from that car, as a young lad.....

.......'twas owned then by an Antipodean back then.......and it was green.......spent a long time idle, outdoors...........and bodywork needed repairs..........wonder where it's been since 1984.......it should have a tale to tell........

    Ode To The Motorist

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”
