Harro would break ur heart, 9 iron into a par 5 leaves it at 15 feet and pars it, some buachaill

    475 yard par 5!

Was the 9 his 2nd or 3rd shot?

Harro's par 5 stats suffer another blow. Still a good round though. He's hitting it some distance these days, turned into a bit of a tank!

Par 5, 2nd shot. The reason they kept it as one is that if the breeze picks up some players might actually struggle to reach the fairway as it's into the prevailing wind mostly.

Can't believe he didnt at least walk away with a birdie there. Sweet Jesus  Still though, he was playing some very nice golf and hopefully it continues over the weekend.

Harrington goes to favourite on Skybets at 5/1. He was saying the bookies were mad to give him 10/1 before the tournament started.

JM Singh -7 through 11. Fish in a barrel out there. Don't think it would make a good Open venue myself, its very boring viewing. Little to defend itself if the wind doesn't get up and greens are soft.

Easy to say that now, everyone knows if the weathers down and ur hitting fairways u can rip a links apart! Wait til the weatther changes. Forget jeev and -7 through 11, he wont finish in the top 10

Course set up would be totally different. Ever compare Carnoustie scoring at an Open to the scoring when they play it at a Dunhill links? Chalk and cheese.

First things first it would be par 70 and is already much tougher. that would be just the start

Coverage is finished now until 2.25 when it resumes on RTE1. You can watch this live on the RTE online player if you are in Ireland.

    you obviously havent played it.....

    i doubt we have met..

They can toughen it up in some areas narrowing fairways and length of the cabbage but if the greens are as favorable for scoring and there is no wind it would not make a good Open venue imo. If the wind kicks up it could be great but who knows what will happen. If it wasn't for the fact that its in Ireland I don't think as many people over here would be pushing for it. Taking two of the longer par 5's and shortening them slightly to make it a par 70 will change the scores but i don't think it makes for anything more exciting. Granted places like St Andrews are at the mercy of wind and rain too and we have certainly seen some poor Opens there..maybe i am just used to seeing the same few Open venues year after year and fear the change...

Honestly, how often do you think the greens would be as soft as today and no wind? Half the country was flooded last night incase you missed that part.

Do they just stop updating the leaderboard as soon as live coverage goes off the air?

Singh -7 after 12 for the last hour.

Yes i know it was very heavy rain. I've seen McDowell land one short of desired yardage when a lot of water came up after contact on the ball (I don't know if he was entitled to relief). Away from the fairways such heavy water can make it a more difficult contact depending on the lie, my point being that while the rain has made it soft on the greens and favorable for scoring, the excess we've experienced can make it harder in other areas and may have taken a shot away here or there in a round. Rain, but not quite as heavy, could have resulted in scorecards slightly better than they are today not worse.

As proven many times, courses dont need to be long to be tough. Portrush like all links courses is defenseless without wind, but its an incredible course to play and I'm sure you will hear that from the pro's all week. There are holes out there that are spectacular even for those who have played all the links courses in Ireland.

I cant wait to watch it over the next few days.

Looking at the forecast, not sure its going to blow that hard....

Of course it could hold the Open, all you have to do is look how they tricked up Pebble when G-Mac won to a few months previous when Dustin Johnson destroyed the place.

Wind and firm greens and you wont see scoring like today.

Of course, if the wind and firm greens are there. Just wouldn't like to see it used as a venue and get weather than doesn't make it the significant test that it COULD be, thats all.

Maybe he has lost his ball and he's still playing the hole.

It's not just about having firm and fast fairways and greens, all they have to do is tighten the fairways, let the rough grow and all of a sudden its 2/3 shots harder a round.
Also that par 5 9th hole which Harrington hit a wedge into this morning could easily be turned into a tough par 4.

It's down on the scoreboard as 475 yards. Shortest par 5 I can remember seeing in a pro tournament

Normally plays like 525 though to be fair man, just seems easy today. Wind picks up, start playing from the rough instead of the fairway = higher scores

Not looking at it Tones, just purely observing the length on the scorecard and saying it's the shortest I remember seeing. All holes play tougher with wind and from the rough, leading to higher scores.

Agree with you its short but like all Links courses it all wind related and where its blowing from.
    The hole in question:

Typical fckn RTE. Can watch Alan Shatter in the Dail alright but not the golf. I presume there is coverage on RTE on TV?

RTE showed no golf between 14.25 and 15.00 when Sky were off air.

I've zero interest watching Joanne Cantell and John McHenry gloating about Ireland's Major winners.

    An opportunity lost.

    Play suspended.....lightening threat.

Sky go I think when the golf resumes

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,733 ✭✭✭SnowDrifts

Yeah, for some reason RTE thought it was a good idea not to show the golf on their player. Not to worry though, you can always watch live coverage of the Dail to keep you entertained.

Pretty sure that she was there with Gerry McIlroy (there was a tall blonde wearing all black and a black baseball cap).

Joanne Cantwell hasn't a clue about golf. She likes saying birdie though. And John McHenry trying to predict the winning score already, same old sh1te with him.

lol - just every time I switch over he's in the rough somewhere with some awful awkward shot, and last I saw he nearly went over onto the beach.

    Didn't mean to offend!

Duh - didn't realise he was in the clubhouse! Or that it's repeat stuff being shown at the moment due to play being stopped. That's what I get for trying to follow two events on the telly and another online at the same time :D

    I'll shut up now.
